Chapter_51
Alyssa’s smile widened at the mention of the Taylor brothers. She leaned back in her seat, savoring the slight tension in the air. Jasper really didn’t miss a beat, she thought. But she couldn’t deny the thrill she felt at his words. “It’s not playing both sides, Jasper,” she said casually, her voice laced with a hint of sarcasm. “It’s called strategy. Something I’ve gotten quite good at.”
Jasper’s eyes flickered with annoyance. He could tell that her words weren’t just playful; they were a reflection of the depth of her plans. His pulse quickened. “I don’t think you understand how far you’ve pushed things this time. You’re not just playing games anymore. There are consequences to this kind of manipulation.”
Alyssa’s gaze was steady, unwavering as she met his. Her demeanor was calm, almost detached, as if she had anticipated every word he’d say. “Consequences? For me?” She laughed softly, the sound light but without humor. “Jasper, you’ve underestimated me for far too long. The world isn’t like your little business empire, where everything follows the rules and everything can be controlled.”
Jasper’s jaw tightened. She thinks she’s untouchable, he realized. And in some ways, she might be right. She had woven herself into the fabric of the Taylor family and managed to manipulate the situation at every turn. It was as if every move she made had been calculated for maximum impact, with no room for error.
“I don’t play by the rules, remember?” Alyssa added, her voice now steady and confident. She straightened in her seat and met his gaze squarely. “And you, Jasper… you should’ve known that.”
He clenched his fists, fighting the wave of frustration threatening to consume him. “I don’t know what you’re trying to prove, but I won’t let you destroy everything.”
Alyssa’s lips curled into a small, knowing smile. “I’m not trying to destroy anything, Jasper. I’m just… making sure things fall into place as they should.” She paused, letting the silence stretch out between them. “And as for the divorce,” she added, her voice turning a bit softer, almost teasing. “If you want to make that happen so badly, you know where to find me.”
Her words cut through the tension like a sharp blade. Jasper’s mind raced, each thought a tangled mess. But deep down, he knew she was right—there was no easy way out of this. No matter how much he hated the idea, the lines between them had blurred too much to simply walk away.
