Chapter 98
Lane had no choice but to deny it to the end. “I didn’t follow you, I swear!”
Jim frowned, clearly irritated. “Looks like we’ll have to do this the hard way.”
Lane, trying to remain calm, smirked, “Are you going to hit me? I know you. You’re Jim Ray, the King of Combat. I have the right to press charges if you hit me without proof of your claim!”
Bonnie raised an eyebrow, impressed by his defiance. She stepped forward and threw Jim a glance. “Let me handle this,” she said, and Jim nodded in response.
Bonnie turned her attention back to Lane, her gaze cold and calculating. Before she could speak, Lane blurted, “It won’t work. I swear I wasn’t following you. You can beat me to death for all I care.”
Bonnie remained unfazed, shrugging nonchalantly. “Chill. We won’t beat you to death. I just wanted to tell you something.”
Lane’s unease grew, and his voice faltered. “W-What is it?”
Bonnie’s eyes narrowed as she spoke, her words deliberate. “To be accurate, it’s my analysis of the situation. It wasn’t really a big deal that you followed Jim, but you’re forgetting that he’s Ms. Bonita’s bodyguard. It’s possible you were trying to get to her through him.”
The mention of Ms. Bonita hit Lane like a cold splash of water. His face turned pale, and his nerves visibly tensed.
“You’re wrong…” he muttered, hoping to deny it.
Bonnie ignored his denial, her voice growing more incisive. “Ms. Bonita has just developed a new nanomaterial and announced she would collaborate with the Knight Group. I suppose some other factions sent you here to locate her and coerce her into working with them.”
Lane’s eyes widened in panic. “That’s not what I’m doing! I swear!”
Bonnie’s eyes narrowed further, her tone turning ominous. “If what you say is true, then you might be a foreign agent, sent here by other countries envious of our success. For all we know, you could be trying to assassinate Ms. Bonita.”
Lane’s face drained of color as Bonnie dropped these serious accusations. He had only been hired to tail Bonnie, but the fear of being mistaken for something far worse began to eat away at him. His mind raced as he scrambled for a way out.
Desperation set in, and Lane finally decided to save his own skin, regardless of the consequences. “I wasn’t following Master Jim,” he blurted. “I was following you! You can’t accuse me of trying to hurt Ms. Bonita!”
Bonnie and Jim exchanged a glance and struggled to stifle their laughter. Lane, completely unaware, had been following the very person he feared.
Bonnie’s expression remained cool, though amusement flickered in her eyes. “Oh? So you were following me? I’m not anyone famous. Why would you want to follow me?”
Lane, cornered and desperate, could no longer hide the truth. “A woman from the Shepard family asked me to follow you to your place.”
Bonnie’s mind clicked. Trina must have gotten suspicious because Bonnie hadn’t stayed at her family home for quite a while.
“Did you take my picture at the pedestrian zone?” she asked, her voice firm.
Lane hesitated but then pulled out his phone, handing it to her with reluctance. Bonnie scrolled through the photos, her eyes narrowing as she found the pictures of her and Jim.
“Did you send these pictures to Trina?” she asked.
Lane gulped. “T–That’s right.”
Bonnie didn’t say anything further. The situation had grown even more complicated than she expected. Suddenly, she heard footsteps approaching.
“Who’s there?” she called out, her senses alert.
Floyd emerged from behind a nearby bush, looking incredibly embarrassed. “It’s… you.”
Bonnie frowned, her gaze shifting to Jim. Floyd cleared his throat, about to speak, when his attention shifted, and he stiffened.
“Hello, Mr. Ivor,” Floyd stammered.
Bonnie turned to look at Ivor, her heart sinking as she saw the fury on his face. His usually composed and dashing demeanor was twisted with rage as he stormed toward them.
