Chapter 78
Bonnie and Jim exchanged only a brief glance, but Ivor, ever watchful, caught the subtle interaction.
“Here you go,” Ivor said, opening the car door for Bonnie.
“Thanks,” Bonnie replied, sliding into the passenger seat with a calm expression.
Jim watched as the car drove away, his gaze unwavering until it was out of sight.
Floyd leaned casually against Jim’s shoulder, his tone light. “You moved fast tonight. That could’ve been a real mess if you hadn’t.”
“I’m Ms. Bonnie’s bodyguard,” Jim replied, his voice steady. “It’s my duty.”
“The night’s still young,” Floyd said, grinning. “How about some kebabs? I know a place.”
“That won’t be necessary.”
Floyd raised an eyebrow. “Don’t worry about the money. You’re the new guy, it’s on me. I like you, man. Come on, let’s go.” Floyd tried to pull Jim along, but the bodyguard wasn’t having it.
Suddenly, both men stopped in their tracks, their attention snapping to something unseen.
“Did you sense that too?” Floyd asked, lowering his voice.
Jim’s eyes remained sharp as he kept walking. “Don’t give anything away.”
Floyd’s curiosity got the better of him. “When did you realize?”
“A minute ago,” Jim replied, his mind already processing the situation. They were being followed.
Floyd glanced around, his expression darkening. “Do you think they’re here for you, or me?”
Jim’s mind raced, replaying all the fights and enemies he’d made. “Could be anyone,” he muttered, his thoughts turning to his rivals in the international fighting circuit. He had made plenty of enemies there.
The two men moved into a more secluded area as Jim kept his eyes scanning the shadows.
“Stop them!” A sharp command came from the hitmen as they revealed themselves from their hiding places. Jim quickly counted—fifteen men, all strong and dangerous. The unmistakable presence of professional killers filled the air.
“Looks like they’re hitmen,” Floyd said, keeping his back to Jim, his voice low.
“Exactly,” Jim answered, already sizing up the situation.
Just then, the hitmen split into two groups. One lunged toward Floyd, while the other focused on Jim.
“They’re after you,” Floyd thought, the realization hitting him like a ton of bricks. But who wanted Jim dead?
Floyd wasn’t just any bodyguard. He had earned his position with sharp instincts. It didn’t take long for him to connect the dots.
“Watch out!” Floyd shouted, his eyes darting around.
“Pow!” Jim’s fist collided with one of the hitmen, sending him sprawling like a ragdoll. Blood spurted from the man’s mouth as he hit the ground with a sickening thud.
“Impressive!” Floyd said, admiration in his voice. Jim’s punch was clearly stronger than his own.
Jim took down several more hitmen in quick succession. Floyd stood back, awed by the ferocity of his fight.
But as Jim focused on his attackers, another hitman emerged from behind him, launching himself from the bushes in an attempt to catch him off guard.
“Watch out!” Floyd shouted, but it was almost too late.
