Chapter 33
Rowena immediately understood why Halle was twisting the story. She feigned heartbreak, tears streaming down her face as she said, “That was my jade bracelet. It’s the only thing I have left to remember my grandmother by.”
She wiped at her tears dramatically, her voice trembling. “She dote on me when she was alive. I was devastated when she passed away. The jade bracelet was all I had left of her.”
She turned to Bonnie, her expression full of feigned hurt. “How could you do this to me, Bonnie? I just asked you to be kind to Ivor. You can argue with me or hit me, but smashing my bracelet… that was too much.”
Halle moved toward Ivor, gritting her teeth and launching into her complaint. “You need to stand up for Rowena, Ivor! Bonnie smashed her bracelet and broke my arm! Look at it! It hurts so badly!”
Ivor turned to Bonnie. “Did you break her arm?”
Bonnie gave a nonchalant shrug. “You could say that. I didn’t break it, though. I just dislocated it because I was thinking about Grandpa Sigmund. Otherwise, I would’ve definitely broken it.”
Her tone was light, as though she were talking about something trivial.
Halle’s face reddened in frustration. “Look at her, Ivor! She hurt me and smashed Rowena’s bracelet, but she’s still acting so smug! I won’t stand for this! You need to teach her a lesson. Better yet, break her arms and legs before you kick her out!”
Bonnie rolled her eyes. “I did hurt you, I admit it. But you deserved it. As for Rowena’s bracelet…” She glanced at Rowena, who was still crying loudly, and added, “You should’ve shown more respect for your grandmother.”
She paused, then sneered. “I don’t understand why you would try to chase me away with that bracelet your late grandmother gave you. You’re such an animal. Actually, animals show more respect for their elders. You’re worse than an animal.”
Rowena was left speechless, her tears halting as she processed Bonnie’s blunt words. Finally, Halle stepped in to defend her.
“What nonsense are you talking about?” Halle snapped. “When did Rowena ever say she’d give you the bracelet? You’re the one who snatched it and smashed it in a fit of rage when she didn’t let you take it.”
Bonnie shot a sly look at Ivor. “Do you believe me, or them?”
“I believe you,” Ivor answered without hesitation.
Bonnie blinked in surprise at his swift and straightforward response.
“You can’t trust her, Ivor! She’s a second-rate, miserable bitch who doesn’t deserve you!” Halle shouted, her voice dripping with venom.
Ivor turned his gaze on her, a chill running through the room. Halle froze, wondering what she had said to provoke such an intense reaction. And then, in one swift motion, he slapped her across the face.
Slap!
The sound echoed loudly, leaving everyone in shock, even Bonnie. Halle staggered back, covering her cheek, her eyes wide with disbelief.
“D-did you just slap me, Ivor? Why did you do that?”
“Why?” Ivor’s voice was cold. “She’s engaged to me. Technically, she’s your cousin-in-law. You need to respect my fiancée. How dare you swear at her and call her names? As her future husband, I have a duty to teach you a lesson on her behalf!”
The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Halle trembled, her mouth opening and closing in stunned silence. Rowena, on the other hand, shot Bonnie a murderous look, green with envy.
Ivor had never defended anyone like this before, not even Bonnie. She had never expected him to take her side so firmly, but there he was, doing exactly that.
After a long, tense silence, Halle couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst into tears. “I can’t believe you’re on her side, Ivor. What makes you think she could be my cousin-in-law? I won’t stand for this.”
She wiped her tears, a bitter expression on her face. “I thought you didn’t want to marry her. Why would you slap me and teach me a lesson on her behalf? I won’t let this go. I’m going to tell my parents about this!”
Ivor’s gaze hardened. “Alright, you won’t let this go? I’ll have the butler show me the security footage.”
He turned to the butler, who was standing quietly at the side of the room. “At once,” the butler responded, swiftly leaving to fulfill his master’s order.
