Chapter 94
Bonnie wouldn’t have wasted her time confronting Trina if it hadn’t been to teach her a lesson. As she sent Trina to her room upstairs, Vera turned to her with a serious expression.
“What are you doing with Ms. Bonita’s researchers?” Vera asked, her tone filled with curiosity and concern.
“I know them,” Bonnie replied, not intending to offer further explanation.
“Who?” Vera pressed.
“I can’t tell you.” Bonnie’s words were firm, but she could see the doubt creeping into Vera’s eyes. Sensing her mother wouldn’t give up easily, she added, “He wouldn’t let me tell anyone, so I can’t.”
Vera frowned, still not satisfied with the answer. “I have no idea how you met any of them, but I need to tell you something. Everyone at Ms. Bonita’s research institute is extraordinary. I know what you’re like, so it’s highly likely you’ll offend one of them.”
Bonnie didn’t respond, remaining silent as Vera continued.
“I want you to stay away from them. Don’t try to approach anyone just to make connections. I don’t want you to create a mess so big it’ll drag me and your father down, or affect the entire family.”
Bonnie stayed quiet, letting her mother’s words hang in the air.
At that moment, Bonnie’s phone buzzed with a text from Ivor.
“Are you coming home tonight?”
Before she could reply, another text followed.
“If you don’t come home, we’ll have to extend our engagement for ten more days, just like last time.”
Bonnie was momentarily speechless. After a few seconds, she composed herself and quickly responded, “I’m coming back now.”
On the second floor, Trina was watching Bonnie leave through the window, her eyes narrowing as she observed from behind the curtain.
“Do you think you’ve won the war by humiliating me today, Bonnie? Hah! Dream on. We won’t know who the real victor is until the very last moment.”
Trina picked up her phone and dialed a number. “Follow Bonnie. Remember, be careful. Don’t let anyone find out about you. Take videos and photos, and send them to me when she goes back to her place.”
Instead of heading back to the Knight premises, Bonnie decided to take a stroll in the pedestrian zone. She hadn’t taken a walk just for fun in a long time, not since she started working on the nanomaterial.
However, it didn’t take long before Bonnie realized someone was following her.
She stopped in her tracks, turned around, and scanned the crowd. The pedestrian zone was busy, filled with people of all types, but one person stood out to her. A man, around six feet tall, wearing a bucket hat and a mask, along with a pair of sunglasses, had his face almost entirely covered.
When he noticed Bonnie had spotted him, he attempted to melt into the crowd.
Bonnie, shaking her head in amusement, muttered to herself, “You’re not built for disguise.”
Jim, realizing the jig was up, sheepishly emerged from the crowd, taking off his sunglasses. “Was I really that bad at disguising myself?” he asked with a grin.
Bonnie gave him a deadpan look. “You should put the sunglasses back on. Someone might recognize you. There are a lot of people here, and if someone figures out who you are, you won’t have anywhere to hide.”
Jim, though not worried about recognition, understood her concern. It wasn’t about his identity— it was about the chaos that might unfold if anyone knew who he really was. The situation could put Bonnie in danger.
“Why are you following me?” Bonnie asked, crossing her arms.
“I’m your bodyguard. I have to keep you safe at all times,” he explained, scanning the surroundings with a vigilant gaze.
Bonnie slapped her forehead in exasperation. “You protected me as Tim when you were on duty. Then you had to protect me as Jim when you were off duty?” she said, trying to make sense of it.
Jim only shrugged, undeterred. Nothing she said would change his mind.
Bonnie sighed, then noticed a quiet barbeque stall nearby. “There’s a barbeque stall over there. It’s pretty quiet. How about we grab a bite?”
Jim agreed, a small smile creeping across his face. “Sure.”
They sat down in a corner, ordering barbeque and beers. As they chatted and ate, Jim casually removed his mask. But suddenly, he sensed something, his instincts kicking in. Without missing a beat, he whipped his head around, scanning the area.
