Chapter 93
“It’s possible,” Ivor said slowly, his eyes narrowing with suspicion. Floyd, deep in thought, didn’t respond immediately, allowing the weight of the words to settle between them.
At the same time, Trina was eager to confront Bonnie the moment she returned home.
“You’re back at last, Bonnie. The SATs are over, right? Why are you still staying out there on your own?” Trina asked, her voice dripping with feigned concern.
Bonnie, however, was not in the mood for her theatrics. “What does it have to do with you?” she replied sharply. Without waiting for a response, she walked straight to the couch, sat down, and began peeling an orange leisurely.
Trina, desperate for sympathy, deliberately glanced at Vera with sorrowful eyes, turning her head away. She pretended to wipe away some fake tears, hoping to manipulate her mother’s emotions.
Vera, seeing this, was immediately enraged. “Trina was just expressing concern for you, Bonnie. That was too much,” Vera chided, not understanding Bonnie’s cold response.
Bonnie smirked faintly. “That’s true! She was so concerned about me that she nearly charged into Ms. Bonita’s private room at the hotel restaurant. The nerve of her.”
Trina’s heart dropped, her face draining of color. Vera, wide-eyed, was taken aback. “What did you say?”
In a desperate attempt to stop the conversation, Trina quickly interjected, trying to divert attention. “You must be tired, Mom. How about I give you a massage?”
Bonnie, however, was relentless. “You’re terrible at covering up what you’ve done, Trina. Did you really think Mom would be so gullible?”
“Tell me what on earth happened,” Vera demanded, her voice sharp and growing suspicious. What Bonnie had just revealed was too serious to ignore. Trina’s attempt at deception had clearly backfired. Vera’s suspicion grew as she noticed the paleness of Trina’s face.
Trina’s façade began to crack. “Nothing much, I guess. Trina just hid outside Ms. Bonita’s private room and got caught red-handed by the researchers,” Bonnie explained casually, her tone revealing a hint of satisfaction in exposing Trina’s mistake.
Vera’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Is this true?”
Trina turned even paler, her attempts to feign innocence falling apart.
Good. That was all the answer Vera needed.
“How dare you do something like that, Trina?! You told me you were just trying your luck to see if you’d run into Ms. Bonita. I can’t believe you hid outside of her private room at the restaurant!” Vera’s voice was laced with anger. She couldn’t believe her daughter’s audacity.
And it didn’t end there—Trina had even been caught.
Vera’s voice was seething with fury as she pressed, “I’m going to ask you again. Did you manage to see Ms. Bonita?”
Trina, now on the verge of tears, tried to garner sympathy from her mother. “I—I didn’t see her,” she stammered, her eyes full of false sorrow.
“Well, did you offend anyone?” Vera pressed further, determined to get the full story.
“Um…” Trina hesitated, biting her lips harder, but there was no escape from the truth now.
Bonnie crossed her legs and looked at Trina with a satisfied smile. “You’d better tell the truth. Otherwise, even I won’t be able to help you.”
Trina was furious. Damn that Bonnie! She was the one who had caused all of this, yet here she was, implying she could help her out of this mess. How dare she!
Bonnie continued smoothly, “I’ll say it since you won’t. You accused me of seducing one of the researchers right in front of them. You implied that Ms. Bonita’s research institute had wicked, corrupt people. Because of that, you offended all the science researchers. Mr. Terry even proclaimed they would never hire you.”
Vera was shocked, her eyes wide. She turned toward Gresham, who had just heard the commotion from upstairs and had nearly tripped down the stairs in his surprise.
“Th-That’s not true!” Trina denied hastily, her voice shaking.
“How are you still denying it, Trina? Do you think that’ll help? Are you going to say that I’m lying?” Bonnie’s voice was calm but unwavering, exposing Trina’s lies with every word.
Trina’s eyes widened in shock. She didn’t get it. Bonnie had never fought back like this before—why was she standing her ground today? It was clear now to both Vera and Gresham who the real liar was.
Vera shook her head, disappointment radiating from her. “You made a huge mistake, Trina. You’re lucky Ms. Bonita wasn’t there in person. Otherwise, our family could very well be wiped out from Pyralis. I want you to go to your room and reflect on your mistake. Do it until the end of summer.”
Trina’s tears fell freely, but they did nothing to soften her parents’ anger. They were infuriated with her. No amount of sorrow would help her now.
Bonnie watched quietly as Trina went upstairs, alone, a silent satisfaction in her eyes. She had made it clear to Trina just how big of a mistake she had made. And from now on, Trina would think twice before trying to interfere with Bonnie’s connections again.
