Chapter 92
“It’ll be okay. I know how to deal with it.” Trina’s resolve hardened. She was determined to go into the private room, no matter what. Things had already gone terribly wrong—what did she have to lose? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. She figured she might as well take a chance and see if luck was on her side.
Perhaps, if fortune smiled upon her, she could impress Ms. Bonita and recommend herself. Maybe the renowned researcher would be taken in by her talents and give her a chance.
Trina pushed the door open without a second thought.
But the room was empty.
How anticlimactic!
“This is weird. Where’s Ms. Bonita?” she muttered, stepping further into the room and looking around in confusion.
“Could she have quietly left during all the commotion?” Hadwin suggested, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
Trina’s heart sank. All her hopes had been dashed in an instant. Just as she was about to give up, her phone rang. It was Vera.
“How did it go, Trina? Did you manage to see Ms. Bonita?” Vera’s voice was brimming with excitement.
Trina clenched her fist, frustration boiling inside her. She answered softly, “Luck wasn’t on my side. I didn’t bump into her.”
She couldn’t tell Vera the truth. She couldn’t let Gresham and Vera know that Bonnie had been dining with Ms. Bonita’s researchers. That would only threaten her own standing in the family. Trina would keep that little detail to herself, no matter what.
She needed to act quickly and figure out how Bonnie had managed to get involved with those researchers. How had Bonnie secured such connections? It didn’t make sense.
Bonnie had moved out of the family home to prepare for the SATs, but she hadn’t returned after they were over. Could it be that she wasn’t living alone? Was it possible that Bonnie had a sugar daddy? Could she have become someone’s mistress? The thought left Trina reeling. If that were true, Bonnie had better prepare for some serious payback.
Back at home, Vera and Gresham were discussing Bonnie’s absence.
“It’s been a long time since Bonnie was home, Mom. Let’s invite her back for breakfast,” Gresham suggested.
“I would have completely forgotten about that if you hadn’t brought it up. The SATs are over. Why hasn’t she come back home?” Vera replied, concern in her voice.
“We’ll know when we see her tonight,” Gresham said, his voice flat but firm.
Meanwhile, Ivor stood in his room, gazing at the car that had just left the villa. He stared at it for a while before turning away. Floyd walked in, a frown deepening his features.
“I sent my men out to investigate Tim, Mr. Ivor,” Floyd began, his tone serious. “But they didn’t find anything on him.”
Ivor turned toward Floyd, his eyes narrowing. “What do you mean by nothing?”
Floyd handed over a document. “His background checks out. He’s from an ordinary family. If there was a forged identity, we would have found it, especially with the resources of the Knights at our disposal. His record is clean.”
Ivor scanned the document, his gaze darkening as he processed the information.
“Don’t you think his background is a little too clean?” Ivor’s voice was low, his suspicion growing.
Floyd seemed to understand what his master was implying, though he hesitated to give voice to it. Ivor was sharp—if he sensed something was off about Tim, then there certainly was.
“I’ll find a way to get something out of this,” Ivor said, his tone firm, but he quickly added, “But there’s no need to move too quickly. Tim hasn’t shown any animosity toward us yet. I’m beginning to wonder if he’s here to protect someone.”
“Who is he trying to protect? Could it be Ms. Bonnie?” Floyd asked, the question hanging in the air as Ivor considered it carefully.
