Chapter 91
“I noticed something odd about how Professor Terry and the others were acting earlier,” Ivor remarked, a hint of curiosity in his voice. Bonnie wasn’t surprised—after all, someone as perceptive as him would have noticed something.
“What do you mean?” she asked, pretending not to understand.
Ivor’s eyes narrowed slightly as he stared at her. “What do you think?”
Bonnie smiled, keeping her composure. “I didn’t notice anything.”
Ivor’s lips curled into a knowing smile. “Color me curious. Why were you with Ms. Bonita’s researchers?”
Bonnie tilted her head slightly. “Oh, that was just a coincidence.”
“You ran into them by chance? Do they know you?” he pressed further, sensing there was more to the story.
Bonnie shrugged nonchalantly. “What’s so strange about that? After all, I won the Best Scholar Award this year.”
Ivor raised an eyebrow. “Many people get that award every year, but none of them become particularly close to those researchers just because of it.”
“Maybe it was because I got a perfect score on my SATs. Would you say there are a lot of Best Scholars like me?” Bonnie teased, throwing a bit of her own wit into the conversation.
Her answer wasn’t particularly convincing, but Ivor couldn’t really argue with her. He knew there was something else going on, but he couldn’t pin it down just yet.
“You say that, but Professor Terry and the others acted very differently around you…” He continued watching her, his gaze intense.
Bonnie raised a brow, unphased. “Did they?”
The tension between them lingered as they locked eyes for a full minute. Finally, Ivor sighed, shaking himself out of the trance. “Did you see Ms. Bonita?”
Bonnie knew what he was getting at. She didn’t want to lie, but she also didn’t want to give anything away. “I didn’t see her,” she answered casually.
Ivor didn’t buy it. He could see the subtle shift in her expression. She was lying, but for reasons he couldn’t yet understand. It only made him more intrigued. He couldn’t help but wonder just how many secrets she was hiding, like a treasure buried deep within her, and he was determined to uncover them.
“They’re gone,” Hadwin said, pulling Trina out of her stunned stupor.
“Huh? Oh.” Trina snapped back to reality, still processing the earlier confrontation.
Hadwin squinted, his gaze cold. It was hard to tell what he was thinking, but the disdain in his eyes was unmistakable. “I told you we shouldn’t stay here trying to see Ms. Bonita. Look where it got you. You can kiss your chances of a career at her research institute goodbye.”
Trina’s face turned pale at his words, the weight of her failure crashing down on her. She cursed Bonnie under her breath, blaming her for everything that had gone wrong.
“Huh?” Something clicked in Trina’s mind, and she whipped her head toward the private room. “Where’s Ms. Bonita?”
Hadwin snapped back to reality as well, his earlier focus on Trina blinding him to the bigger picture. Trina was right—where was Ms. Bonita? She should have been there. After all, today was supposed to be the anniversary of her research institute. It didn’t make sense for her to not be present.
“Is she still in there?” Trina asked, her voice a mixture of desperation and confusion.
Hadwin walked over to the door, and after a moment of hesitation, he reached for the handle. The door was shut tight. He wasn’t sure if anyone was still inside.
Trina’s hand reached out, about to push the door open, but Hadwin quickly stopped her. “You’re out of your mind! Do you realize you might disturb her if she really is inside?”
Trina paused, her fingers inches from the door, but the thought of confronting Ms. Bonita—and possibly making a scene—stopped her in her tracks.
