Chapter 84
The summer heat was unbearable, and it was just another Tuesday at the research institute. As the leading member, Bonnie had the responsibility of treating everyone to a meal. A staff member sent her a message: “We’ll be waiting for you at the Jade Horizon Hotel. Looking forward to seeing you there.”
Bonnie quickly responded, “Sure.”
She hailed a cab and set off at 10 o’clock. The drive only took about half an hour, and as soon as she stepped out of the cab, a familiar voice caught her attention.
“Wow! This place really is the biggest hotel in Pyralis! I heard it’s bigger than thirty-two thousand square feet. It’s huge! This is my first time here. I should thank you for this, Hadwin. There’s no way I could come here without you. Thank you so much!”
It was Trina, Bonnie’s insufferable sister, flaunting her false gratitude.
Hadwin puffed up with pride upon hearing her words. “We’re getting engaged soon. That makes us practically family. No need to thank me. But it is true that not everyone gets to step foot into the Jade Horizon Hotel. Only high society members get in. You need at least a million dollars on their member card to be allowed access.”
Bonnie, standing nearby, overheard them and saw them approaching. Trina spotted her instantly.
“Is that Bonnie? Is she going in? Oh, no. I need to stop her before she embarrasses herself,” Trina said, sounding concerned as she rushed over to block Bonnie’s way.
Bonnie raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Why not?” she asked casually.
Trina couldn’t help but think, What a hick! but she kept her tone sweet. “This is the Jade Horizon Hotel! It’s the largest hotel in Pyralis. You need a million-dollar membership card just to get in, and you have to be a member of high society. How are you going to afford that? You would’ve walked right in if I hadn’t stopped you. The security guards at the entrance would’ve kicked you out!” She raised her voice deliberately, hoping the crowd would see how foolish Bonnie appeared.
Hadwin approached and handed Trina a silver card. “Since you’re Trina’s sister, I’ll take you inside. But you’ll need to behave. Don’t wander off and embarrass me. My parents will be coming soon, and they might say something because of your behavior. They’re older than us and deserve our respect. You’ll be eating here for free, so know your place and keep your head down. If you can do that, I’ll let you in.”
The crowd around them looked on, clearly impressed. “That’s a silver card! It’s not just any member card. You have to put at least a million dollars on that to get one.”
“I’ve heard about that card. Honestly, I could afford it, but who would spend that much money just to eat here? There are better things to invest in,” someone commented.
“Right. We’re businessmen, after all. Why spend that kind of money on a membership when there are projects to invest in? They must be so rich they don’t know what else to buy.”
Hadwin smiled at the murmurs of admiration, and Trina beamed, proud of herself for snagging Hadwin away from her sister.
Turning to Bonnie with a sneer, Hadwin said, “What are you waiting for? No need to feel sorry for yourself just because we’re eating here today. We’re here to meet someone important. Who knows? We might run into Ms. Bonita, the science prodigy, herself.”
Trina, eager for any opportunity to impress, was already imagining how she’d make a lasting impression if she did happen to meet Ms. Bonita. She reminded herself to show all her skills in front of the research team.
Bonnie, however, remained unfazed and walked confidently toward the hotel entrance, ignoring Trina and Hadwin’s words.
Trina smirked. What a moron. They’d just told her that not everyone could get in, but Bonnie didn’t seem to care. She’d have to watch and see. The security guards were going to kick her out any second now.
