Chapter 82
The SR League was renowned for its ability to complete any mission, as long as the price was right.
Bonnie glanced at Jim, nonchalantly sipping her tea. “I don’t know any of the top brass in the SR League. I only know its founder.”
Jim froze, his eyes widening in disbelief. “Y-You know the founder of the SR League?!”
The SR League—the most powerful task force in the world—was a name that commanded respect, and Bonnie had never mentioned knowing its founder before. Jim couldn’t believe his ears.
Bonnie shrugged casually. “I know him from a few years back.”
Jim’s curiosity peaked. “How did you meet him?”
Bonnie leaned back, the air of mystery surrounding her as she spoke. “It was pure chance. The founder’s mother was seriously ill, and he posted a mission on the league’s platform with a one billion dollar reward. I was a little bored at the research institute at the time, so I accepted the mission.”
Jim’s eyes widened as realization hit. “That explains what happened when you went off the radar. You never told me where you went, even when I asked. So, you went to treat the SR League founder’s mother?”
Bonnie simply sipped her tea, unfazed. “Are you really so surprised that I know the founder of the SR League?”
Floyd, who had been silently observing, couldn’t help but shake his head. “How funny,” he muttered under his breath. Bonnie was the nation’s leading researcher, a legendary figure in her own right. The SR League founder might be a significant character, but compared to Bonnie, he was nothing. She was a force to be reckoned with.
Bonnie glanced at the clock and stood up. “It’s getting late. You should go. Tread lightly, and don’t let anyone see you.”
Jim grinned confidently. “Like I said, don’t worry about it. I’m the King of Combat, after all.” With a playful smile, he leaped out of the window, vanishing into the night.
Bonnie sat back down, opening her laptop, and initiated a video call. The screen flickered to life, revealing a striking man with blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. His defined features gave him a mysterious allure, and his confident demeanor was immediately apparent.
He flashed a playful smile, his accent thick with his native tongue. “Took you long enough to call me, Bonnie. Did you forget about me?”
Bonnie suppressed a smile at his dramatic tone. She hadn’t called him in a while, and this was exactly why. William always acted like a drama queen when she did.
“I need a favor, William,” Bonnie said, cutting straight to the point.
William pouted, crossing his arms. “Geez. You only call me when you need something, then throw me aside when you’re done. You’re such a heartless woman, Bonnie. A real scumbag, you know that?”
Bonnie rolled her eyes. “Sure. Goodbye.”
“No, wait! Hold on! Don’t hang up. What is it you need? I’ll do it. Just tell me.”
Bonnie outlined Jim’s situation and asked for William’s help in keeping Jim’s identity from reaching the Knights.
“This isn’t a small job,” William warned, his expression turning serious. “The Knights are the wealthiest and most powerful family in Pyralis. If you want me to keep this from Ivor, it’s going to cost you.”
Bonnie’s gaze remained steady. “Name your price.”
William raised an eyebrow, theatrically clutching his chest. “Are you seriously talking about a price? I thought we were closer than that!”
Bonnie felt a headache starting to form. “Let’s do it this way. I’m heading to Pyralis in a few days. I’ll be your guest, and you’ll make sure I have a good time while I’m there.”
William immediately brightened. “Done. You’re on.”
Bonnie smirked. “Oh, and by the way, a little birdie told me you’re engaged to Ivor!” she teased, watching as William’s playful demeanor shifted to something much darker.
His smile vanished, replaced with a more somber expression. “What about it?”
Bonnie leaned forward, curious. “Nothing. Just wanted to know how serious that is.”
The tension between them grew thick as William’s expression hardened, the playful air gone entirely. Bonnie had just mentioned something that had clearly struck a nerve, and she knew that this conversation was far from over.
