Chapter 80
“It’s not that cold. You can put it back on,” Bonnie protested, but Ivor ignored her and gently draped his suit jacket over her shoulders. The warmth from the jacket was comforting, and, though it was meant to protect her from the chill, it warmed more than just her body—it warmed her heart too.
“Thank you for helping me back at the party,” Bonnie said softly, looking up at him. “But you shouldn’t have said what you did. It was a personal matter, and now it’ll probably lead to some misunderstandings. Everyone probably thinks we’re a real couple now.”
Ivor smiled affectionately, his gaze tender as it met hers. “Let them think that,” he replied calmly.
Bonnie raised an eyebrow, surprised by his response. “Don’t you care?”
“So what if they do?” he responded, his voice low and steady. “I think it’s fine if they believe it.”
Bonnie’s eyes widened in disbelief, and she studied him carefully, trying to gauge whether he was being serious. After a few moments of silence, she finally asked, “Do you have a real crush on me?” It was the same question she had asked him before, the last time he had denied it.
Ivor grinned and nodded. “Bingo.”
His answer was so casual, so light, that Bonnie wasn’t sure if he was joking or being serious. She was still mulling it over when, out of nowhere, Ivor lowered his head and kissed her forehead.
Bonnie stood frozen in shock, her heart skipping a beat. Her hand instinctively moved to her forehead as she stepped back, staring at him, still in disbelief. Ivor met her gaze calmly, a faint smile playing on his lips.
A few seconds passed before Bonnie suddenly took several steps back, her expression a mix of surprise and confusion. “Are you serious? Or is this some kind of joke?”
Seeing her flustered was refreshing for Ivor, and he couldn’t help but enjoy the moment. He decided to tease her just a little bit more.
“Take a guess,” he said with a mischievous grin.
Bonnie rolled her eyes, frustrated, and turned to walk away, her steps brisk.
“Hey, are you mad?” Ivor called after her.
She didn’t respond, her back to him as she kept walking.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have teased you,” he apologized, but she kept walking, determined to get away. She brushed past his car, clearly planning to call a cab home.
Ivor realized what she was doing and quickly moved to catch up with her. He reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her gently back to his side. His grip on her shoulder tightened, and he spoke with seriousness in his tone, “I mean it. There are eight days and twenty-two hours left until the engagement ends. By then, you’ll know how serious I am.”
Bonnie stopped walking, scanning him carefully as though trying to decipher his thoughts. She couldn’t quite figure him out.
“You just love to act all mysterious,” she said, half exasperated, half intrigued.
Ivor could tell she wasn’t angry anymore, and a smile tugged at his lips. “Let’s go home,” he said softly.
Later that night, Ivor tracked down Floyd as soon as he arrived home.
“Did you do what I asked?” Ivor inquired, his voice eager.
Floyd nodded. “The engagement ring you reserved is being worked on. It’ll be ready before your engagement ends. I’ve also finalized the venue setup.”
“Good. Well done,” Ivor replied, his impatience barely contained. This engagement would be a memory Bonnie would never forget.
He waited for Floyd to leave, but after a moment, he realized the man was still standing there.
“Is there something else?” Ivor asked, his brow furrowing.
Floyd hesitated, clearly torn. “There’s more to Tim than meets the eye, Mr. Ivor,” he said, unable to contain his concerns any longer.
