Chapter 75
No one had expected Bonnie to slap Sydney so forcefully.
Sydney stumbled back, covering her face, her eyes burning with rage. “H-How dare you slap me? I can’t believe you did that!”
Bonnie’s voice was ice-cold. “Why can’t I slap you? You called me a hick and a whore. You were born into a wealthy family, and I’m sure you’ve been well-educated since you were young. And yet, you insult someone without knowing the full story.”
The bitterness in Bonnie’s words was unmistakable.
Sydney’s mind reeled. Never in her life had anyone dared lecture her, let alone a young woman. She had been pampered like royalty, treated as if she were the most precious thing in the world. No one had ever slapped her.
“Are you serious?!” she hissed. “I’m your husband’s aunt. You’ve committed a great sin by hitting me!”
Bonnie scoffed. “My husband? I’m only engaged to Ivor. We haven’t married yet, so don’t try to pull the ‘aunt’ card on me. Let’s assume for a moment that you’re right. You still deserve what happened because you don’t know how to carry yourself with dignity.”
Sydney fumed, her face turning red with anger and helplessness. Unable to control herself, she flung herself into Gunnar’s arms, sobbing theatrically.
“She hit me and Flynn, honey! Why are you just standing there? You need to stand up for us! How am I supposed to live, knowing she slapped me at my age? I should just kill myself!” Her voice was shrill, almost exaggerated.
Gunnar, both annoyed and helpless, glanced at Ivor. “Maybe Bonnie should…”
Ivor, unbothered, spoke up. “Flynn brought this on himself.”
Bonnie’s gaze snapped to Ivor, surprised by his response. She had braced herself for him to side with his relatives, using this as an excuse to break off their engagement. Instead, he was supporting her.
“H-Hey, Ivor… You can’t—” she began, still processing his words.
Ivor cut her off, his tone calm. “I might have been further away, but I saw Flynn moving in on my fiancée with bad intentions.”
Gunnar’s eyes narrowed as he turned to his son. “Is that true?”
Flynn clenched his teeth, a flash of anger in his eyes. “That’s not what happened, Ivor. I went over there because I wanted some food. She’s the one who came up to me and rubbed against me. She said she didn’t want to go back to her old life now that your engagement is ending. She even promised she’d do anything if I accepted her.”
Flynn’s voice dripped with false indignation. “Your engagement might be ending, but I’ll always think of her as my former cousin-in-law. She’s a whore who would gladly use her body for personal gain. There’s no way I’d touch her, even if she were the last woman on Earth.”
Jim’s blood boiled at the words. He was ready to spring into action, but Bonnie gave him a subtle glance, urging him to hold back. She didn’t want him to jeopardize his identity, no matter how much Flynn deserved to be taught a lesson.
Sydney, practically frothing at the mouth, shouted, “Listen to him, Ivor! Your fiancée was the one who was being inappropriate. She seduced my son! I demand she get down on her knees and apologize!”
Bonnie smirked, unfazed by the accusation. She surveyed the room, her eyes scanning over the gossips and onlookers. “I won’t kneel and apologize,” she said coolly. “Isn’t it true that you Knights wanted me gone anyway? Well, I couldn’t care less about this place. Goodbye.”
With that, Bonnie turned to leave, but before she could take a step, a strong, callused hand gripped her arm. She froze, looking down at the hand before her eyes traveled up to meet Ivor’s conflicted, yet steady gaze.
Was he going to ask her to apologize to his relatives? She had a hunch he wouldn’t make her stay for something like that.
Before she could process it, Ivor pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. Bonnie and everyone else were left stunned, completely confused by his sudden gesture.
