Chapter 69
Bonnie glanced at Halle, her eyebrows raised slightly, a mocking gleam in her eyes.
“Wasn’t your dress supposed to be one of Hamish’s designs? I seem to recall you bragging about wearing it to the party. So why aren’t you?” Bonnie’s voice was calm, but there was an unmistakable hint of sarcasm.
Halle gritted her teeth, her gaze fixed on Bonnie. She was furious, wanting nothing more than to slap the smug look off Bonnie’s face. “Wipe that smug smile off, Bonnie! Did Ivor buy you that dress? That just means you didn’t get it on your own!”
Bonnie’s lips curled into a subtle smile, her eyes gleaming with cunning and ridicule. “Well, how smart of you to figure that out. Ivor, who’s also my fiancé, went to great lengths and spent quite a bit of money on this. I told him not to, but he insisted. What can I do?” Her tone dripped with mock innocence.
Halle’s expression twisted in anger, and Rowena looked even more furious than before.
Bonnie couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of their frustrated faces. “You’re his cousin, Halle, and you’re his childhood friend, Rowena. Maybe you should try talking some sense into him. Tell him not to waste all that money on me.”
“Why you!” Halle seethed, her face turning red with rage. “That’s a load of crap! Ivor hates you. There’s no way he bought you anything! He must have only gotten you that dress because Grandpa made him! If I had to guess, Grandpa probably bought it for you, not Ivor. You’re just trying to make yourself look better.”
Halle’s words struck a chord, and Rowena silently agreed, letting out a relieved sigh. There was no way Ivor would spend that kind of money on someone like Bonnie.
“Suit yourself,” Bonnie said, indifferent. She couldn’t care less about what they thought.
“Hmph! Well, if you say so, that must be the truth. You’re just a nobody, after all. Why would Ivor waste that kind of money on a dress for you?” Halle scoffed.
Bonnie stared at her defiantly, unfazed. “I’m a nobody? How did you figure that out?”
Halle hesitated, suddenly aware of Bonnie’s reputation as the Best Scholar in the city. She quickly remembered that Rowena had attempted to meet Master Quenton when he was at the Knights’ estate, hoping to convince him to take her on as an apprentice. However, they were both taken aback when they learned that Master Quenton held Bonnie in high regard. They also discovered that Bonnie’s tea-brewing skills surpassed even his own.
Just then, Ivor appeared. Seeing him, Rowena quickly grabbed Halle’s arm. “Here comes Ivor. Let’s ask him if he bought Bonnie the dress.”
Halle’s eyes narrowed with suspicion. She refused to believe that Ivor would buy Bonnie anything. Without hesitation, she hurried over to him and asked, “Bonnie said you bought her the dress, Ivor. Is that true?”
She shot Bonnie a taunting look, silently thinking, Just wait, I’m going to expose your lies.
Ivor paused for a moment, considering his response, before saying, “Yeah, that’s right. Is there a problem?”
Both Halle and Rowena stood frozen in shock. Bonnie locked eyes with him, surprised by his straightforwardness.
“Well, uh… Grandpa must have made you do it, right?” Halle said, still unwilling to give up.
Ivor’s eyes darkened, his tone turning cold. “I bought a dress for my fiancé. Why would anyone need to make me do that?”
His words hit Halle and Rowena like a slap, leaving them speechless.
“C-Come on, Ivor. You can’t be serious, right?” Halle stammered.
Ivor didn’t respond. Instead, he took Bonnie’s hand and said, “Let’s go over there. They have your favorite tiramisu cake.”
