Chapter 63
Fiancé, he said…
Bonnie lowered her gaze, trying to hide the surge of emotions rushing through her.
“Fiancé?!” Dwayne and Sacha exclaimed in unison, clearly shocked. They had seen this man at the school gate and assumed Bonnie had hired an actor. Hearing that he was her actual fiancé completely stunned them.
“Impossible! I’ve never heard of him!” Sacha scoffed, still convinced that Bonnie had staged the whole thing. “She’s lying, Sergeant Zain. She doesn’t have a fiancé. Her ex-fiancé called off their engagement. She must’ve hired some actor to pretend to be her fiancé because she doesn’t have the guts to tell her family the truth.”
Dwayne nodded, thinking Sacha made a valid point.
Sergeant Zain turned to Bonnie, his expression growing serious. “Is he really your fiancé? You shouldn’t lie to me.”
Bonnie met his gaze and replied firmly, “He is.”
Sergeant Zain studied her for a moment, then glanced at Ivor. “Please show me your identification, sir.”
Ivor handed it over. Sergeant Zain passed it to one of his subordinates to verify. A few moments later, the subordinate returned, sweat beading on his forehead. He whispered something in Sergeant Zain’s ear.
The officer jolted, his eyes widening in recognition. “So, you’re Mr. Ivor Knight.” His voice dropped with newfound respect. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize. Someone get him a cup of tea. The finest tea we have.”
Dwayne and Sacha exchanged bewildered looks. Ivor Knight? Who was he? Why was Sergeant Zain suddenly treating him with so much respect?
Ivor didn’t immediately accept the tea. Instead, he turned to Sergeant Zain and asked, his tone cool, “Do you believe she’s my fiancé now?”
“Of course I do!” Zain replied hastily. He’d heard of Ivor’s engagement before. In fact, the entire city of Pyralis had been talking about it. His own daughter had even mentioned feeling jealous of the woman who had won Ivor’s heart. It had never occurred to him that he would meet her today.
“Can I take her home now?” Ivor asked, his voice calm but assertive.
“Of course! Be my guest!” Sergeant Zain said, waving his hand in a gesture of approval.
But Dwayne wasn’t done yet. He stepped forward, his voice tinged with irritation. “How can you let her walk free, Sergeant Zain?! Just because he’s an important man doesn’t mean you should let her off the hook!”
Sergeant Zain’s patience snapped. “You said Ms. Bonnie seduced you repeatedly, and you rejected her every time, right? That’s why she supposedly harbors a grudge against you and insulted you in front of your girlfriend, hiring someone to beat her up?”
“Exactly!” Dwayne raised his chin, his arrogance flaring. He glanced at Bonnie with disdain. “It doesn’t matter how pretty you are. You’re beneath me.”
Sergeant Zain slammed his hand on the desk, making Dwayne jump. “What a load of nonsense!” he growled.
Before Dwayne could respond, Sergeant Zain’s voice grew louder and more forceful. “Ms. Bonnie is the future wife of the CEO of Knight Group. Why would she need to seduce you, the son of a mediocre four-star hotel owner? Do you really think what you’ve been saying makes any sense?”
“What—?” Dwayne’s voice faltered, his face turning pale. Sacha’s mouth hung open in shock. She turned from Bonnie to Ivor and back again. Was this stunning, refined man really the most powerful figure in the Knight Group? The same man every woman in Pyralis dreamed of marrying?
Holy moly. It clicked for her then—news of Ivor Knight’s engagement had shaken the entire city just recently!
“Are you saying he’s the Knight Group CEO?” Dwayne stammered, his tone now shaky.
“Exactly. In the flesh,” Sergeant Zain replied, his voice firm.
Dwayne and Sacha’s confusion dissolved into wide-eyed realization. Sergeant Zain wasn’t joking. The man standing before them was none other than Ivor Knight, the elusive and powerful CEO of the Knight Group.
