Chapter 62
“Is that you, Dwayne?” Sergeant Zain recognized him immediately.
Dwayne was momentarily taken aback by Bonnie’s presence. He hadn’t expected to see her here. Was she the one Sacha had claimed was bullying her?
Before he could process it further, Sacha suddenly burst into tears and ran straight into his arms. “You’re finally here, Dwayne! Bonnie hired a group of thugs to beat me up! Luckily, they found their conscience and didn’t do it. Otherwise, I’d be in the hospital by now… Boo hoo…”
Dwayne frowned, his face darkening. “Why would she do that?”
Sacha wiped her tears dramatically, eager to tell her version. “It’s all because of the bet. We were just joking around, but she insisted I shave my head. At first, she threatened me in our group chat, saying she’d release a video of me if I didn’t keep my end of the bet. She wanted to humiliate me. Then, she hired those men to force me into shaving my head! And there’s more…”
Dwayne raised an eyebrow, his curiosity piqued. “More?”
“Yeah,” Sacha sniffled, “She told me that you tried to come on to her. She said she was out of your league and that I needed to keep you on a leash. She even went as far as saying you’re not worth her time—she said you disgusted her by offering her a million dollars just to try to get her to marry you.”
Dwayne’s stomach twisted in frustration. He believed every word Sacha said, after all, Bonnie had made similar remarks to him in the restaurant. Sacha wasn’t there, so she couldn’t have known that unless Bonnie had shared it with her.
He was already irritated with Bonnie from that incident at the restaurant, and now, hearing Sacha’s version, his anger surged.
Turning to Sergeant Zain, he added, “It’s just like my girlfriend said. This woman here kept throwing herself at me, but I rejected her. She probably holds a grudge against us because of that. She insulted me in front of my girlfriend and then hired someone to attack her.”
Sacha was practically glowing with triumph. She had maneuvered this perfectly. Dwayne was clearly upset now, and he’d have no interest in Bonnie from here on out.
Sergeant Zain glanced at Bonnie, his eyes narrowing. “Is that true?”
Bonnie remained calm, her voice even. “It’s their word against mine. There’s no evidence to prove it.”
Sergeant Zain nodded, understanding the logic behind her statement.
Sacha, however, wasn’t giving up so easily. She pointed to the hired men on the floor. “They’re witnesses! You hired them. They’ll back up my story!”
Bonnie slowly turned her gaze toward Sacha, her tone sharp. “You say they’re witnesses and I hired them. Do you have any proof of that?”
Sacha’s face flushed with frustration. She hadn’t anticipated that Bonnie would maintain her composure under pressure like this.
“Bonnie… that name sounds familiar,” Sergeant Zain muttered under his breath, trying to piece things together.
Bonnie took a slow sip of water from the desk, her thoughts drifting. She remembered being here once before. Back then, Sergeant Zain had been just an ordinary officer. It was during an incident where he had checked her social security card and inadvertently learned she was the renowned researcher, Ms. Bonita.
“It sounds really familiar…” Zain continued to think aloud.
Suddenly, an officer standing nearby snapped his fingers. “Ah! I know! Is she that Bonnie?”
Bonnie’s grip on her cup tightened. Had he figured it out?
Sergeant Zain turned to the officer, confused. “Who?”
The officer grinned. “It’s her. Bonnie, winner of the Best Scholar Award!”
Zain’s eyes widened in recognition. “Oh, that’s why her name sounded so familiar. My daughter mentioned her once.”
Bonnie relaxed a little, feeling a small sense of relief. At least this wasn’t going to be as bad as she thought.
“Where’s your family? Why aren’t they here yet?” Zain asked, his gaze shifting to Bonnie.
Just then, the door to the station opened with a soft creak, and a deep voice echoed from the entrance.
“I’m sorry I’m late.”
Bonnie turned toward the sound, and her heart skipped a beat. There stood Ivor, his hair slightly tousled, his tie hanging loosely around his neck, and beads of sweat on his forehead. It was clear he had rushed to get here.
Bonnie’s heart softened at the sight of him, a warmth spreading through her chest.
“I’m the one who should be apologizing,” she said quietly. “I didn’t mean to drag you into this.”
Ivor’s expression softened immediately, and he shook his head. “What are you talking about? I’m your fiancé.”
