Chapter 56
“Is it true you won the Best Scholar Award?”
The question came quickly, almost as if they had been waiting for the right moment to ask.
“Yep,” Bonnie replied, her tone casual, but there was a glimmer of pride in her eyes.
“Congratulations,” Ivor said, his voice sincere but edged with curiosity.
“Thank you.”
“I’ve been thinking,” he continued, leaning back in his chair. “Is there anything you want to eat? Let’s celebrate tonight. It’ll be my treat.”
Bonnie shook her head. “Mom and Dad are celebrating with me tonight, so I won’t be going back to your place.”
Ivor raised an eyebrow at that, clearly surprised.
Ged, who had been quietly listening, seized the moment. “Your agreement was for a month, and it’s been well over half a month. You need to drag this out for as long as you can! Tell Bonnie she has to extend your agreement by a day if she goes back to her place tonight.”
“Would that be okay?” Ivor asked, his gaze dark and intense.
“What’s wrong with that? Are you embarrassed? Come on! You’re trying to win your future wife’s heart. Who cares about your pride?” Ged grinned mischievously, already composing a message.
Ivor looked down at his phone with a sigh, his fingers moving over the screen as he sent the text to Bonnie. Ged leaned over and caught a glimpse of what it said:
“Our agreement was for a month. You’re taking a day out of it to go back to your place. Because of that, we need to extend the agreement by ten more days. I’m sorry, but it’s Grandpa’s orders.”
Bonnie, now reading the message, couldn’t help but laugh quietly to herself. Ivor was a man of few words, but when he wanted something, he certainly wasn’t afraid to ask for it.
That evening, Bonnie’s group chat was flooded with a barrage of messages.
“Am I dreaming? Bonnie really got into Pyralis University! Do you guys know she got the Best Scholar Award too? She got the perfect score!”
“Wait, what? Seriously? Isn’t she just a nobody? Didn’t she always get last place in the entire school?”
“Anyway, what about the bet…?”
“Can you please not talk about that? That was just a joke. Bonnie wouldn’t take it seriously.”
Bonnie, who had been silent in the chat until now, finally typed a single message:
“I’m dead serious about the bet.”
The group went eerily quiet for a moment.
Bonnie’s lips curled into a mischievous smile as she typed again: “Did you really think I was going to let it slide just because I didn’t say anything? Let me remind you, it was you who suggested shaving your heads. We even recorded a video about this.”
The mood shifted quickly. Sacha, the class head, took the first step to try and defuse the tension. “Just let this go, Bonnie. We’re all classmates, and anyway, none of us took it seriously.”
The rest of the group quickly followed suit.
“Yeah! Don’t be so petty, Bonnie. It was just a joke among classmates. You’re the only one who took it so seriously.”
“We wouldn’t have brought it up if you had lost the bet.”
“Seconded.”
Bonnie’s smirk deepened. “None of you took it seriously? You all spread the word about this, I’m sure you did it because you wanted to stop me from going back on my word when I lost the bet.”
The group went silent once more.
“Look at the way you talked to me. Do you think I’m some kind of fool? The fact is, I’m the one who won the Best Scholar Award. I’m definitely smarter than all of you, so don’t bother playing the victim. I see right through you.”
There was a long pause, as no one knew how to respond. They had underestimated Bonnie, and now, it was clear who held the upper hand.
Bonnie, not one to let the moment slip by, ended with a final message:
“Save your breath and start shaving your heads. I’ll release the video to the public if you don’t honor the bet. I won’t stop at the internet either. I’ll send a copy to your future colleges and workplaces as well.”
The message was clear. Bonnie wasn’t playing games anymore.
