Chapter 55
Gresham and Vera stared at Trina with a mixture of disappointment and distrust. Their silence hung heavy in the air, suffocating her with the weight of their judgment.
Trina, feeling the sting of their disapproval, broke down. Her tears flowed freely as she pleaded, “How could you say that, Fernanda? I was just worried about Bonnie’s SATs, that’s all. And I only happened to see her student ID by chance…”
Bonnie raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “Heh. You just happened to see it, but you took a picture of it. Let me ask you a question—what were you really plotting?”
Trina’s words faltered as she scrambled for an explanation. “L… Um… You really let me down, Fernanda. I told you about that because I trusted you. You deliberately projected it onto the big screen to humiliate my parents because Grandpa gave his company to my father. I know you and your parents have a grudge over that and want to take the company back for yourselves.”
Fernanda snapped. “Motherfucker! How could you be so fucking shameless, Trina?!” Without warning, she rolled up her sleeves and grabbed a fistful of Trina’s hair, yanking hard.
“Ow! My hair! It hurts!” Trina screamed in pain.
The two women began fighting right then and there, each pulling at the other with raw aggression.
Bonnie, meanwhile, sat back with her drink in hand, completely unfazed. She watched the spectacle unfold with a smirk, her posture relaxed as if it were all a bit of entertainment. The chaos was almost amusing.
“Holy crap! This is big motherfucking news!” Ged burst into Ivor’s office, his voice full of excitement.
Ivor barely looked up from his desk. “Are you feeling okay?”
Ged didn’t wait for an answer. He grabbed a glass of water and gulped it down before leaning in with wide eyes. “I have the biggest scoop for you!”
Ivor sighed, clearly unimpressed. “What is it? Do you really have to be so dramatic?”
Ged grinned, leaning forward. “Look at you. Did you know the SAT scores are out today?”
Ivor paused. To be honest, he hadn’t paid much attention to the SATs or Bonnie’s performance on them. But something about Ged’s tone caught his interest.
“Do you know how your fiancée did on the SATs?” Ged pressed.
“I didn’t ask her,” Ivor replied with a hint of discomfort. He was still wary about how to approach Bonnie’s academic performance, especially considering her previous struggles.
“I knew it. If you knew about her scores, you wouldn’t be reacting like this. Take a guess. How do you think she scored?” Ged’s tone was teasing now.
Ivor frowned, his irritation growing. “You know she doesn’t do well in tests, but you came all the way here to tell me about it. Are you trying to make fun of her? Let me tell you something, Ged. I’ll look past this because you’re my buddy, but I won’t let it slide if you mock her to her face.”
Ged froze, his eyes wide as he processed the sudden shift in Ivor’s attitude. “H–have you really fallen in love with her?! Are you finally going to get a girlfriend?”
Ivor didn’t deny it. “I’ll spend some time with her and see where it leads us, for starters.”
Ged’s grin returned, but there was something more sincere in his eyes now. “Damn straight! You’re going to give it a try! Bonnie had the perfect score! She’s won the Best Scholar Award!”
Ivor’s expression faltered. “Are you kidding?”
Ged nodded eagerly. “Do you think I’d kid around with this? Bonnie aced the SATs! And she’s being humiliated in front of her family by her cousin, Fernanda, and Trina. They tried to make her a laughing stock by projecting her scores on the big screen at the party.”
Ivor raised an eyebrow. “How did you find out about this?”
“Easy! You know her grandparents’ birthday party was today, right? Word is that Bonnie’s cousin Fernanda wanted to make her the butt of everyone’s jokes. And Trina—she’s the one from the rich family, right? Well, somehow, she got her hands on Bonnie’s student ID. They worked together to project Bonnie’s SAT scores for everyone to see. And guess what? Instead of laughing at Bonnie, they ended up being the joke! Can you believe that?”
Ivor blinked, slowly processing the information. He’d always thought of Bonnie as a bit of an underdog, someone who didn’t fit into the mold of the high-society girls he usually interacted with. But now? Now he was starting to see her in a whole new light.
“I have something I need to say, and you might not like to hear it,” Ged continued, his tone turning serious. “We were wrong about Bonnie, Ivor. She’s an extremely talented woman. Don’t you like competent women?”
Ivor hesitated, unsure how to respond. He had been surrounded by so many superficial women from wealthy families in the past. They were pretty, yes, but most had little to offer beyond their looks.
Ged pressed on. “Many women from wealthy families have tried to approach you in the past, but you thought they were all too sheltered. They couldn’t do anything besides act cute and learn some run-of-the-mill skills. That’s why you didn’t like any of them. But Bonnie—she’s different. Your mom was right. You wouldn’t deserve her if we stripped you of your status as CEO of the Knight Group.”
Ivor’s fingers stilled on his keyboard. For a long moment, he sat there, lost in thought, processing everything Ged had said. Then, without another word, he picked up his phone and began typing.
Ged leaned over, trying to catch a glimpse of the screen. “Who are you texting?”
Ivor didn’t answer. He just hit send.
“Beep!”
Bonnie’s phone buzzed, and she glanced at the new message, a hint of curiosity in her eyes.
