Chapter 37
Bonnie stood there, stunned by Alfred’s words. She could hardly believe the audacity of his tone.
With a smug expression, Alfred lifted his chin and spoke condescendingly, “Mr. Jim is no ordinary man, Ms. Bonnie. He’s an extremely proficient fighter and very proud. How could you compare these bodyguards with someone as great as him? You’d better watch out—these men might come after you!”
Bonnie chuckled lightly, unfazed by his attempt at intimidation. “Oh, this Jim character is quite something, huh?” she replied.
Tim Reid, still disguised as one of the bodyguards, felt a bead of sweat trickle down his forehead. He held back the urge to reveal his true identity as Jim Ray, trying his best to maintain his composure. He could barely suppress his anger at Alfred’s arrogance, yet he remained still, waiting for the moment to pass.
Alfred, eager to make his point, continued. “Mr. Jim works for someone even more important. You might have heard of Ms. Bonita, the world-renowned researcher who successfully developed the world’s latest nanomaterial.”
Bonnie raised an eyebrow, but Alfred continued, thinking he was gaining her respect. “If you offend Mr. Jim, you’ll offend Ms. Bonita as well. Not even Mr. Sigmund will be able to help you. They won’t do him any favors.”
Bonnie’s expression remained calm, almost indifferent. Alfred thought he had impressed her, but she simply responded coolly, “What do I need to understand? Do you think Mr. Jim and Ms. Bonita would stir up trouble with me over something so trivial? Do you think they have time for that? Are you calling them petty?”
She shot him a cold glance and added, “If that’s what you’re trying to say, they’d probably want to teach you a lesson instead.”
Alfred’s face flushed with anger, but he had no retort. Bonnie had thoroughly schooled him, and he found himself unable to argue with the logic in her words.
Just then, Ivor returned from his work, looking composed as always. He surveyed the scene with a calculating gaze.
“Have you chosen the bodyguards?” he asked, directing his attention to Alfred.
Alfred, eager to impress, gestured toward the gathered bodyguards. “You’re looking at them. The best of the best. Especially the new captain. He’s formidable,” he said, practically glowing with pride as he pointed to Jim.
Ivor sized Jim up with a keen eye before turning to his assistant and bodyguard, Floyd. “Spar with him. Size him up,” he ordered.
Floyd, a seasoned fighter, stepped forward confidently. “Should I go easy on him?” he asked, his voice carrying a playful challenge.
Before Ivor could respond, Jim spoke up. “That won’t be necessary.”
Floyd raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. “Oh? Confident, aren’t you?” he remarked. Then, he cracked his knuckles and added, “Fair warning. Even the black belts are no match for me. I’m in a different league from the people you just defeated.”
Jim simply nodded and gestured for him to begin. “Let’s start.”
Floyd, though respecting Jim’s confidence, had already made up his mind. He intended to show Jim his place, not with the intention of humiliation, but to remind him that no matter how skilled he was, there was always someone stronger. Floyd wasn’t out for blood, but he believed it was necessary to take Jim down a peg.
Bonnie, who had been quietly observing the exchange, walked over to Ivor. “I suggest Floyd fight with everything he’s got,” she said, her voice calm but resolute.
Ivor raised an eyebrow, curious. “Is he really that good?” he asked.
Bonnie glanced at him with a sly smile, her tone light. “What do you think would happen if Floyd went up against me?”
Ivor took a moment to consider the question, then nodded thoughtfully. “He might not win.”
