Chapter 32
“Five million dollars?” Bonnie scoffed, eyeing the check with disdain. “Do you think I’m some kind of beggar?” She could barely hide her contempt. After all, her monthly salary from the country far exceeded five million, not even counting her dividends.
“You’re asking for way too much. You’re a nobody. Sure, the Shepards might have taken you back, but I hear you’re not exactly popular there. They don’t even give you pocket money.” Rowena sneered, crossing her arms over her chest and lifting her chin in a display of superiority.
“Five million may seem like a lot to you, but the Shepards would fall to their knees and thank me if I handed them this much.” She looked at Bonnie with a sense of victory, as though she had made a point.
Bonnie’s eyes narrowed, and her voice dripped with sarcasm. “Really? Five million dollars might sound like a fortune to someone from a middle-class family like you. But to someone like me? It means nothing. Take my outfit, for instance. This alone is worth several million.”
She gestured at her clothes, confident in their value.
Rowena burst into laughter, her tone mocking. “Did you just say your outfit is worth several million dollars? Are you sure you’re not talking about some third-world country currency?”
Bonnie’s gaze hardened as she glanced down at Rowena, a smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. “You can’t even tell who made my outfit. You’re utterly clueless.”
Rowena’s eyes narrowed in skepticism as she looked closely at Bonnie’s ensemble. The logo caught her eye, and her eyes widened in disbelief. But instead of being impressed, her expression shifted to one of mockery.
“You’ve done it now, Bonnie,” Rowena said, her voice dripping with contempt. “You wanted to look important so badly that you slapped Hamish Evans’s unique logo on some random outfit.”
Bonnie’s lips curled in a sly smile. “I know you didn’t recognize it, but I didn’t realize just how clueless you were. This is no counterfeit.”
Rowena rolled her eyes, clearly unimpressed. “Clueless? You’re the ignorant one here. You flip through magazines and think anyone can wear Hamish Evans’s designs. He only makes three outfits a month, and they’re fought over by the wealthiest and most famous. There’s no way someone like you could get one.”
She crossed her arms, looking Bonnie up and down, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “I’m a huge fan of his, and I know his designs inside out. I can say with certainty that he hasn’t made anything like what you’re wearing.”
Bonnie smirked. “That’s because Hamish designed this outfit specifically for me. Of course, you wouldn’t know that.”
Rowena’s laughter echoed in the room. “Did you hear that, Halle? She claims Hamish designed this outfit just for her. Next, she’ll say that Hamish works for her and designs a new outfit every day. How shameless!”
Halle, wincing from the pain in her arm, joined in the mockery. “That’s why I said she doesn’t deserve cousin Ivor. She tarnished his name when they were engaged. Get her out of here now, Rowena. She’s disgusting.”
Rowena, eager to continue her superiority act, pulled off a jade bracelet from her wrist and held it out to Bonnie. “My grandmother spent a fortune on this bracelet for my eighteenth birthday. Do you know how much it cost? I’m sure you’ll be shocked. Ten million dollars. Ten million! What do you think? Are you surprised? Take it. You’ll never wear anything more extravagant than this. Consider it a gift from me—out of the kindness of my heart.”
Bonnie eyed the bracelet coldly, extending her hand as if to accept it.
Rowena smirked, a sense of victory in her eyes. “Why isn’t Bonnie keeping up her usual aloof act? Did she think five million wasn’t enough?”
But as Rowena reached to place the jade bracelet in Bonnie’s hand, Bonnie suddenly snatched her hand back, causing the bracelet to slip from Rowena’s grip and fall to the floor with a loud smash. The jade shattered into several pieces.
Rowena screamed, her voice high-pitched with shock. “My bracelet!”
Halle, who had been about to shout at Bonnie, froze in disbelief. Before she could process what had just happened, Ivor appeared from his study, and an idea sprang to her mind. She pointed at Bonnie, her voice full of accusation.
“That’s enough, Bonnie. Rowena might have said something you didn’t like, but smashing her jade bracelet? Her grandmother gave her that! How could you be so cold-hearted?”
