Chapter 27
Bonnie raised an eyebrow, sensing something off in Ivor’s tone. Was that jealousy? She couldn’t quite place it.
“I had to tell my family I was moving out,” she said, dragging her suitcase toward the stairwell, trying to ignore the uneasy feeling.
“Let me help you,” Ivor said, striding over and lifting the suitcase from her hands.
Bonnie shot him a baffled look. Wasn’t he upset with her just earlier? Why was he being so nice now?
“It’s okay. I can do it myself,” she said, reaching for the suitcase.
But Ivor refused to let go. He simply carried it upstairs without another word.
He reached her room, pushed the door open, and stepped inside. Bonnie froze. Didn’t he say he would never set foot in her room? She followed him in, thoroughly puzzled.
“Thanks,” she said, her voice polite but confused.
“You’re welcome,” Ivor replied with his usual coldness. After a brief pause, Bonnie realized he wasn’t leaving.
“You can go now,” she said, frowning slightly.
Ivor hesitated, his brow furrowing. “Let’s play another round.”
Bonnie realized what he was after: he wanted to play chess again. She sighed inwardly.
“It’s late, and I need to go to school tomorrow. We’ll do this some other time, okay?” she said, hoping he would take the hint.
Ivor glanced at his watch. “Huh, I guess it is late,” he muttered. The silence that followed felt awkward, and Bonnie found herself staring at him. Why wasn’t he leaving?
He shifted uncomfortably before finally speaking up. “So, how did it go with your family?”
“I told them I’d be staying somewhere else for a month,” she replied, not looking up.
“And they agreed to that? Didn’t they ask you anything? Weren’t they worried about you moving out?” Ivor asked, his concern apparent.
“I lied. I told them I was moving out to prepare for the college entrance test.”
Ivor paused, knowing her struggles at school. He hesitated before speaking again. “I graduated from high school years ago, but I can tutor you in subjects like English and math.”
Bonnie blinked, taken aback. Did he really think she was struggling that badly?
“Thanks, but no thanks. I don’t need any help,” she said, trying to suppress a smile.
Ivor looked embarrassed. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.”
Bonnie chuckled softly. “I’m doing fine at school, and you could never hurt my feelings. Anyway, you should leave, Mr. Ivor.”
But Ivor remained still, not moving.
Bonnie climbed into bed and propped herself up on one side, a playful smile on her lips. “You don’t plan on sleeping here with me, do you?”
Ivor’s eyes flickered with surprise as he noticed her curves and the seductive, yet innocent, smile she flashed him. A warmth spread through him, and his ears turned red in an instant.
He quickly turned around, his expression suddenly cold. He pushed the door open and left without a word.
The next morning, Bonnie got out of bed and made her way downstairs. She found Neville sitting at the kitchen table, anxiously scratching the back of his head.
As she approached him, she realized he was doing his homework.
“What’s the matter? Didn’t you finish your homework yesterday?” she asked, leaning against the doorframe.
Neville quickly shushed her, looking around nervously.
