Chapter 26
“And you? It’s not that I look down on you, but you should know better. Getting into a third-rate college would be a miracle for someone like you. So what’s the point of moving to an expensive place? That would just be a waste of money,” Vera said, her voice tinged with frustration.
Bonnie smiled confidently, not backing down. “I told you I could get into Pyralis University, didn’t I?”
Vera felt a flicker of guilt at her harsh words, but soon it was replaced by irritation. She thought Bonnie was just bragging again.
“I’ve had enough of this, Bonnie!” Vera snapped. “If you want me to pay your rent, apologize to me right now! If you promise not to brag again, I’ll get you the place that costs 400 bucks a month.”
Bonnie shook her head firmly. “I was never going to ask you to pay for it.”
Vera raised an eyebrow, her voice growing more exasperated. “Oh, yeah? How are you going to pay for it, then?”
Bonnie chuckled. The sound seemed to irritate Vera even more.
“What’s so funny?” Vera frowned, clearly annoyed.
Bonnie’s eyes glinted with a sharpness that caught Vera off guard. “You give Trina everything she wants, even though I’m your biological daughter. It’s funny when you think about it.”
Vera’s eyes widened, her face flushing with anger. After a moment of silence, she found her voice.
“You want to blame me for that? Trina has worked hard to make me and your dad proud! She’s a great student, she’s won piano competitions, joined the equestrian club, and so much more. She’s done a lot for this family!” Vera’s voice rose. “Your grandpa and grandma’s birthdays are coming soon, and she’s even bought them presents with the money she’s saved in the past year. You? All you do is fool around! Why should I spend so much on you?”
Bonnie’s temper flared. “When have I ever spent your money? I’ve always supported myself! And I’ll get grandpa and grandma better gifts than Trina!” she retorted, her voice sharp with frustration.
Vera crossed her arms, her expression dismissive. “Sure you will,” she said with a mocking laugh.
Bonnie’s patience snapped. “That’s it. I’m leaving,” she declared, grabbing her luggage.
“Come back!” Vera shouted after her, her voice filled with a mix of anger and panic. “Do you hear me, Bonnie? Get your ass back here! If you don’t, I’ll never pay your rent!”
Bonnie didn’t respond, walking out the door without a second glance. She ignored Vera’s shouting and eventually disappeared from sight.
Vera, standing in the doorway, clenched her fists in frustration. “Fine! Let’s see how you survive without me!” she muttered, slamming the door shut behind her.
It was already dark when Bonnie arrived back at the Knight Residence. As she walked in, she spotted Ivor sitting on the sofa, his posture stiff, as though he had been waiting for someone.
Before she could ask who he was waiting for, Ivor spoke first, his voice cool. “Why are you back so late?”
