Chapter 25
“The engagement might not have been our idea, but don’t forget that you’re still my fiancée for a month, Bonnie. You shouldn’t date any other guys, okay?” Ivor said, his tone serious.
Bonnie glanced over her shoulder, her expression dry. “Just date some other girls, and we’ll call it even.”
Ivor was left speechless, unsure of how to respond.
Bonnie turned to Heath and said, “Let’s go.” They left the room together.
Ivor stood still, watching them leave, his lips pursed in thought.
Ged couldn’t help but comment, “Bonnie is something else. She fixes robots, she fights, and now she’s The Shepherd? Guess she’s not the loser we thought she was. You should really cherish her, Ivor. She might talk some crap, but I think she’s good enough for you.”
Ivor’s frown deepened, his mind growing more pensive as he processed Ged’s words.
After lunch with Heath, Bonnie returned home to pack her things.
Vera, looking puzzled, asked, “What are you doing?”
“I’m moving out so I can focus on preparing for the college entrance test,” Bonnie replied, tossing clothes into her luggage.
“Where are you going? Have you found a place?”
“Uh-huh,” Bonnie answered, keeping her tone light.
Vera’s concern grew. “Where is it? What’s the rent?”
Bonnie understood her worry. “It’s not as expensive as Trina’s place.”
Vera’s expression shifted to alarm. Two years ago, Trina’s rent had been over 3,000 dollars a month. Even a cheaper place would likely cost around 2,000 dollars.
“Can’t you find somewhere cheaper? I’ll try to find one for you,” Vera said, opening a rental app on her phone.
She scrolled through listings, showing Bonnie one. “Look at this one. It’s only a few hundred dollars a month, and it even has an en suite bathroom.”
Bonnie looked at the photo, which featured a dingy, worn-out room. There wasn’t even a desk.
“So am I supposed to study on the bed?” Bonnie asked, unimpressed.
Vera hesitated. “Well, I suppose you need a desk…”
“How about this one?” Vera suggested, pointing to another listing. “There’s a bed, a desk, a closet, and even an air conditioner. It’s a bit more expensive, though. Around 400 bucks.”
Bonnie narrowed her eyes. “You never complained about the rent when Trina moved out.”
Vera bristled. “You’re not her, okay?”
Bonnie fixed her with a steady stare, and Vera quickly caught herself.
“Well, it’s not that I’m partial to her,” Vera continued, her voice softening, “but her results were great. She seemed likely to get into Pyralis University.”
Bonnie sighed inwardly, understanding the unspoken comparison but choosing not to argue.
