Chapter 10
Neville’s eyes were wide with excitement as he handed Bonnie the tools she’d requested. “Oh, okay. Here you go.”
Bonnie nodded, taking the tools from him. “I need a little more to work with, though.”
“They’re in my room. I’ll get them for you,” Neville replied eagerly, already running off.
Not long after, he returned with the requested tools, his face alight with anticipation. Bonnie wasted no time. She took apart the robot with swift precision, carefully making adjustments as she worked.
Ged’s eyes widened as he watched her, completely astonished. “She did it!” he exclaimed, looking at Ivor.
Ivor, who had been silently observing, suddenly found himself impressed. His brother, Neville, was a robotics prodigy, and yet Bonnie had been able to diagnose and fix the issues with remarkable speed. It wasn’t just her skills—it was the fact that she had done it effortlessly.
“I’ve fixed it,” Bonnie said, a hint of satisfaction in her voice.
Neville gaped at the robot in her hand, still stunned by how quickly she’d managed to fix it. “You did that so fast!”
Bonnie smiled, shrugging casually. “Oh, the chip in the robot can be optimized too. Do you have a computer?”
Neville’s eyes widened even more. She can optimize chips? This was beyond what he’d expected. “Be right back,” he said, darting upstairs to grab his laptop. He returned quickly, eager to see what she could do next.
As he handed the laptop over to her, Ged and Ivor leaned in to watch. Bonnie connected the robot to the laptop and began typing so quickly that her fingers were a blur on the keyboard.
Ged watched in awe, his mind struggling to keep up with her speed. I’ll be damned, he thought. He had never seen anyone work that fast, especially not with robotics.
Ivor’s gaze narrowed as he observed her skillful movements, now fully intrigued. There was something undeniably impressive about Bonnie, but it was also starting to feel… different. There was more to her than met the eye.
After a few minutes, Bonnie shut the laptop and handed the robot back to Neville. “Try it now. It should be all good.”
Neville wasted no time. He eagerly started the robot, and immediately, the loud noises that had plagued it before were gone. The robot flew smoothly, and its cleaning functions were now more precise and efficient than ever.
“This is so cool! You’re amazing!” Neville gushed, eyes sparkling with admiration.
Bonnie shrugged again, clearly modest about her skills. “It’s nothing really. It’s just a simple robot. Easy to fix.”
The child prodigy, Neville, stared at her, still in awe. Simple? For the first time in his life, he felt like a rookie in comparison.
“You’re so skilled,” Neville continued, his voice full of wonder. “Did you start tinkering with robots when you were a kid?”
Bonnie set down her cup of tea and nodded. “I took apart the TV at home as soon as I could walk.”
Neville’s jaw dropped. “And then?”
“I put it back together,” Bonnie said, deadpan.
Neville’s eyes went wide, clearly in disbelief. “Woah, that’s insane!”
Ged, who had been watching this exchange with an amused smile, suddenly burst out laughing. “Dude, your IQ is 200. How could you believe that horseshit? She’s just kidding!”
Neville rolled his eyes at Ged, unfazed. “Do you think I can’t tell when someone’s joking?” he retorted, completely ignoring Ged’s teasing.
Neville turned back to Bonnie, looking at her earnestly. “Please be my mentor! I want to be an expert in robotics too.”
Ged choked on his laughter. “What the hell are you doing, Neville?” He slapped his forehead. “Ivor, your brother’s acting… weird!”
Ivor glanced between Neville and Bonnie, his expression unreadable. He knew Neville was a robotics genius, far beyond his years, and seeing his brother’s reaction to Bonnie was telling. Bonnie wasn’t just skilled—she was an expert. And the way Neville was looking at her, almost pleading for her to teach him, confirmed it.
Ivor suddenly recalled something Bonnie had told him once: she wasn’t interested in him, even if he slept naked on her bed. He had brushed it off at the time, but now he wondered if maybe Bonnie wasn’t as indifferent as he’d thought. Her expertise, her confidence—maybe she wasn’t just playing at this after all. But despite all that, Ivor still couldn’t shake the feeling that she wasn’t his match.
As Neville continued to beg Bonnie, she sighed in frustration. “I have no time to teach you anything, okay? I’ve got a lot of important stuff to do.”
Ged shook his head, his smirk never leaving his face. “You’re always skipping class.”
Bonnie shrugged nonchalantly. “Well, I might not be doing great in school, but I’m good at robotics, alright?”
Ivor, for the first time, spoke up with an approving nod. “You’re good. I’ll give you that.”
Neville’s eyes lit up at the compliment, but his determination didn’t waver. He stepped closer to Bonnie, his tone growing desperate. “If you agree to be my mentor, I’ll get Ivor to kiss you right now!”
Bonnie groaned in exasperation. Seriously?
Ged burst out laughing, clutching his stomach. “Your brother just sold you out, bro!” he said, still trying to catch his breath.
Ivor, already feeling uncomfortable from the situation, stiffened. “He’s not my type, okay?” Bonnie snapped, trying to wave away the awkward tension.
Neville gave Ivor a sympathetic look over his shoulder, then turned back to Bonnie, unrelenting. “If he’s not your type, what about me? I might be young, but I promise I’ll take good care of you.”
Bonnie’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Oh my God! Now he’s trying to steal your future wife, Ivor!” Ged laughed so hard, he nearly fell off the couch.
Ivor felt his face heat up, his patience wearing thin. “Have you done your homework?” he demanded, his voice taking on a rare edge.
Neville paused, looking guilty for a moment. “Not yet. I’ll do it later.”
“Go back to your room, and don’t come out until you’re done,” Ivor ordered, his tone brokering no argument.
“No! She hasn’t agreed to mentor me yet!” Neville protested.
Before he could finish, Ivor swooped in, picking Neville up with ease and carrying him upstairs, away from the growing tension in the living room.
Ged, still laughing, managed to control himself when he saw Ivor’s cold expression. “Alright, alright, I’ll be good,” he said, clearing his throat and trying to change the subject. “So, I heard about that new nanomaterial they’ve developed. They’re holding a press conference soon, right? You have the inside scoop on when it’s going to happen?”
Ivor sat down, his gaze serious once more. “They haven’t announced it yet,” he replied, his tone businesslike.
Bonnie, who had been listening to the conversation, chimed in casually, “It’s set for the 28th of this month.”
Ivor raised an eyebrow, impressed. “You sure?”
Bonnie nodded confidently. “Yup. I’ve got my sources.”
The atmosphere in the room shifted again, but this time, it was because of Bonnie’s quiet, unassuming confidence. She wasn’t just playing in the world of the rich and powerful—she was moving within it with ease. And for the first time, Ivor wasn’t quite sure where he fit in her world.
