Chapter 85
Eden’s brows furrowed slightly, a feeling of unease creeping up her spine. She could sense the subtle tension in the room, the cold air that Riley always seemed to carry with her. It wasn’t the first time Riley had been distant or acted as if she were above Eden, but today, there was a noticeable chill in her behavior.
Taking a deep breath, Eden adjusted the papers on her desk, making sure everything was in order. She couldn’t let Riley’s attitude disrupt her focus. After all, she had worked hard to get to this position, and she wasn’t going to let anyone’s coldness undermine her professionalism.
“Is everything all right, Miss Davis?” Eden asked calmly, her voice polite yet firm.
Riley barely looked up from her phone, her expression unreadable. “Everything is fine,” she replied with an air of indifference. Her voice was as cold as her gaze, and it only deepened the tension between them.
Eden didn’t press further. She didn’t need to. She was here to work, not to dwell on the awkwardness that Riley seemed determined to maintain. She turned to the task at hand, focusing on the designs she had to review for the upcoming autumn collection. The feeling of being observed, of being judged, lingered in the background, but Eden pushed it aside. There were bigger things on her mind.
Her thoughts briefly drifted to Victor—his face from the dream still fresh in her mind. It had been weeks since she last saw him, and even longer since they’d shared any meaningful conversation. The complexity of their situation weighed on her. She wasn’t sure if she could face the truth of what was happening between them, but she couldn’t deny that a part of her missed him.
She snapped back to reality when she heard Riley’s voice again.
“Miss Bleu, we have a meeting in thirty minutes. The design board wants your input on the new collection,” Riley said, her tone slightly more curt than necessary.
Eden nodded, not missing the subtle way Riley emphasized her name. It was as though she had to remind Eden of her place, as if to assert some unspoken dominance. But Eden was used to this. She’d earned her position and had no intention of letting anyone undermine her.
“Thank you, Riley. I’ll be ready.” Eden’s voice was composed, carrying the confidence she had built over the years. She turned back to her work, making sure everything was prepared for the meeting.
As the minutes passed and the office buzzed with the usual morning activities, Eden couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. She was used to the pressure, to the stress of balancing her career with the more personal aspects of her life. But today felt different—more tense, more uncertain. Something was on the horizon, and she wasn’t sure if she was ready for it.
When the time came for the meeting, Eden made her way to the conference room with a sense of calm determination. Her thoughts, however, continued to wander to Victor. What was he doing right now? Did he think about her the way she thought about him?
The door to the conference room opened, and Eden was greeted by a round of polite smiles from her colleagues. As she took her seat at the head of the table, she put aside her personal thoughts and focused on the task at hand. There would be time for everything else later. For now, the work had to come first.
But even as the meeting began, Eden couldn’t escape the nagging feeling that something in her life was about to change.
