Chapter 30
Victor sat in the back seat of his car, his fingers lightly tapping against the armrest as his mind wandered back to the encounter with Eden. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted in him tonight, something he hadn’t expected or anticipated. He had seen her smile, heard her words, and felt a connection that seemed to bridge the gap between their worlds in a way that was both unsettling and comforting.
As his car turned onto the main road, Victor glanced out the window, his thoughts drifting to the scene just moments ago—Eden walking away, her graceful figure disappearing into the distance. He had wanted to walk with her, to ensure she was safe, but he had stopped himself. He wasn’t sure where this new impulse came from, but he knew it had something to do with the unexpected way he felt about her. The sensation was unlike anything he had experienced before. A strange pull that beckoned him to get closer, even though he knew it was dangerous.
Victor let out a sigh and leaned back against the seat, the drive back to his apartment feeling longer than usual. Tomorrow, he thought. He had to see her again. The thought of Eden being around, of the possibility of getting to know her more, brought an odd sense of peace to his restless heart.
Meanwhile, Eden walked side by side with Jasper, feeling the cool night breeze brush against her skin as they made their way toward the apartment. Jasper was asking about her first day at work, but her mind kept returning to the events earlier at the dinner.
Eden couldn’t help but think about Victor and the strange way he had looked at her tonight. His eyes had lingered on her longer than necessary, and there was something in his gaze that unsettled her. Was it just curiosity? Or something more? She tried to shake off the thought. After all, she was just the new director, and he was her boss. There was no reason for her to read too much into it.
“Jasper,” she said, breaking her own thoughts. “Everything went fine today. No one’s bullying me.” She grinned, teasing him as she had always done. “I’m the director, after all. Who would dare?”
Jasper laughed, his gaze softening as he handed her the milk tea. “I’m just glad you’re doing well, Eden. It’s good to see you happy.” His voice had a tenderness to it that Eden couldn’t ignore.
“Thank you for the milk tea,” she said with a grateful smile. The sweetness of the drink was a small comfort, washing away the lingering aftertaste of wine from dinner. She could feel Jasper’s presence beside her, a constant source of support, and it made her feel safe, despite the whirlwind of emotions that seemed to swirl within her.
As they continued walking through the lively streets of Fashion Square, Eden caught a glimpse of her surroundings. The neon lights of the shops, the distant sounds of conversations and laughter, and the occasional honk of passing cars all seemed to blend together in a chaotic harmony. The city never seemed to sleep, and for a moment, Eden felt like she was just another piece of it.
But deep down, there was a tug in her chest—a nagging feeling that something important was unfolding, and she wasn’t sure if she was ready for it.
As they neared the apartment building, Eden looked over at Jasper, her heart beating a little faster. “Thanks again, Jasper. For everything.”
He gave her a soft smile, his expression full of understanding. “Of course, Eden. Always.”
Just as they reached the entrance, Eden caught a glimpse of a car slowing down in the distance. She didn’t recognize the car, but for some reason, her pulse quickened. She glanced over her shoulder, but the car had already turned the corner, fading into the night.
It wasn’t until she stepped into the building that she realized the car had been Victor’s.
The thought lingered in her mind as she entered her apartment, the door clicking shut behind her. She wasn’t sure what to make of all that had happened tonight, but one thing was certain: tomorrow was going to be another day full of surprises.
