Chapter 47
Victor’s gaze lingered on Eden for a moment before he spoke, his voice calm but carrying an undertone of curiosity. “Miss Bleu, what are your plans for the weekend?”
He waited, hoping for her answer. Part of him wanted to join, to spend more time with her, but another part of him was consumed with a quiet frustration. His mind, restless and sharp, was waiting for Anson’s update—Anson, who had been slower and more distracted lately.
It wasn’t even ten o’clock yet. Anson had just landed, but the tension in Victor’s chest had already begun to build. He needed answers, and he needed them fast. The minutes felt like hours.
Anson, who was no doubt caught up in his own chaos, would curse Victor if he knew how distracted his boss had become in the face of his personal desire.
Eden paused for a moment, considering his question. “I’m planning to look for a place for my family in River City,” she replied with a calm, composed smile.
Victor’s gaze softened slightly, but his mind raced. “Is it because I transferred you back to the head office?” The guilt crept into his voice before he could stop it. Eden, with her calm demeanor and gentle smile, seemed unaffected by the change. She had always carried herself with such poise, even in moments of difficulty.
Her smile deepened, though her eyes held a hint of something more complex. “I suppose that’s part of it. River City is home to me, after all. It’s where I feel most at ease.”
Victor’s eyes briefly flickered, but he didn’t miss the subtle weight in her words. There was more to her return than just the professional shift. He sensed something personal, something unresolved.
She had her reasons. The Gienger family was here, and Victor knew from their brief exchanges that there was history, even pain, tied to this city for Eden. Revenge, perhaps. Answers, certainly.
Before Victor could say more, Eden’s phone rang, breaking the moment. She looked at him apologetically, her expression softening as she stood to answer.
“Excuse me for a moment,” she said, walking a few steps away as she lifted the phone to her ear.
Victor watched her go, his gaze lingering, distracted by the way her casual elegance filled the room. She had such an air of grace, of quiet confidence.
The voice on the other end of the line was unmistakable—Jasper.
“Hey, Jasper. Have you had breakfast yet?” Eden’s tone was playful, a contrast to the more serious conversation she’d just had with Victor.
Jasper’s voice, full of laziness and charm, came through the speaker. “No, I’m waiting for you to join me. You know, the usual.”
Eden couldn’t help but smile. “I knew it. You haven’t gotten up yet, have you? I already had breakfast at Time Square, though. If you want, I can bring you something. But then again, I’m sure it won’t taste as good after it’s cold.”
Jasper’s teasing voice replied immediately. “You’re so heartless. All you care about is your own stomach, huh? You don’t care about me at all.”
Eden chuckled softly, her eyes sparkling with familiarity. She had known Jasper for years, and his playful nature was something she had always found comforting. But her tone shifted, becoming more serious. “Jasper, if you’re tired, take the day off. You can come with me tomorrow.”
Jasper, ever the loyal friend, quickly retorted, “No way. I can’t let you go alone. You know you have that innocent look, and it worries me. I can’t let anything happen to you. Wait for me at Time Square. I’ll be there in a minute.”
Without waiting for her response, he hung up.
Eden shook her head, a smile still on her lips, before she turned back to Victor. His gaze was fixed out the window, his posture relaxed, yet there was an edge to his demeanor that hadn’t been there before.
“I’ll go now, Mr. Alwynn. See you on Monday!” she said politely, her smile warm but her eyes a little distant.
Victor’s response was almost nonchalant, his voice tinged with an emotion he tried to hide. “Okay.”
As Eden left, Victor leaned back in his chair, his lips curving into a faint smile—one that held an edge of something darker, something deeper. His gaze shifted to the window, but his mind was miles away.
If Eden was truly the one he thought she was, she would never escape him. From now on, there would only be him. Only Victor. And no matter what, she would never have eyes for anyone else.
His longing for her had only deepened with time, turning into something far more obsessive. And as much as he tried to ignore it, it was becoming impossible to do so.
