Chapter 7
Victor’s mind drifted as the car moved through the congested streets, his thoughts swirling with memories of the past. The weight of time seemed to press on him, each passing second a reminder of everything he had lost. The pain in his chest was almost unbearable. He had tried so hard to bury the memory of Eden, but it resurfaced now, as if fate had decided to remind him of what had been taken from him all those years ago.
He could hear Anson’s voice, soft and distant, but his mind was elsewhere. It had been eighteen years since Eden had disappeared. Eighteen years without a trace, and now, he found himself faced with a woman who carried the same name. The coincidence felt too heavy, too unsettling. Was it really her? he wondered. The question lingered in his mind, but the more he thought about it, the less certain he became.
Anson, noticing the change in Victor’s demeanor, decided to steer the conversation elsewhere. He knew how much Victor hated dwelling on the past, especially on matters like this. “Victor, how about we go to Capital Appetite Restaurant? We can talk there, get something to eat. I’m sure you’re starving.”
Victor didn’t respond right away, his gaze fixed on the scenery outside the window. The sunlight filtered through the car, casting a golden hue on his sharply defined features, making him look even more imposing. After a long pause, he gave a slight nod. His response was brief, almost detached, but it was enough.
“Alright,” Victor murmured, his voice low and tinged with impatience.
Anson didn’t press further. He knew better than to push him when he was in one of these moods. The rest of the ride passed in silence, the tension palpable in the air between them. The city outside was bustling with life, but inside the car, it felt as though time had stopped for Victor, as though he was lost in a world of his own. His thoughts were consumed by the image of Eden, the woman who had haunted him for years.
Victor’s mind wandered back to the last time he had seen her—an unforgettable night. That night, everything had changed. It was the night that shattered his world, the night Eden disappeared from his life. The memories were painful, vivid, and unrelenting. Each year that passed without any sign of her had only deepened the wound.
Now, seeing her name again, hearing it from the lips of a stranger—it stirred something inside him that he wasn’t sure he was ready to face. Could it really be her? Had she somehow resurfaced after all these years? And if so, what would it mean for him?
The car arrived at the restaurant, but Victor didn’t seem to notice the change in scenery. His mind was still locked in the past, trapped in the memories of Eden.
Anson, ever perceptive, opened the door and stepped out, offering a friendly smile as he waited for Victor to follow. “Let’s eat, Victor. It’ll be good for you to take your mind off things for a while.”
Victor finally roused himself from his reverie, stepping out of the car with an air of authority. He walked into the restaurant, but the pain in his eyes—hidden behind his calm exterior—was unmistakable. Eden had returned to his thoughts, and it was clear that whatever had happened in the past, it was far from over for him.
As they sat down to eat, Victor found himself staring at the glass of wine in front of him, lost in the memories of the past, and of the woman who had once meant everything to him. Would he ever find the closure he so desperately sought? Or was Eden’s name destined to remain an unhealed wound in his heart forever?
