Chapter 78
Myra’s frustration simmered beneath the surface as she struggled to accept the reality of the situation. Her mother’s scolding only added fuel to her anger. She had never been one to easily back down, but at that moment, she found herself at a loss. The words Victor had spoken had caught her off guard, and the way Eden carried herself now, so confidently, seemed to be a challenge to everything she had ever known.
Bethany, on the other hand, wasn’t as easily deterred by Myra’s outburst. She knew how to maneuver through these kinds of situations with finesse. She’d always been the more calculating one, understanding the stakes at hand far better than her impulsive daughter.
“Victor is not someone you should cross, Myra,” Bethany warned in a quiet, yet firm voice. “Do you want to risk the Gienger family’s future over a petty grudge with Eden? Think about it carefully. We can’t afford to antagonize someone with that kind of power.”
Her words sank in. Myra knew her mother had a point, though it stung. She couldn’t afford to lose sight of the bigger picture, even if Eden’s presence made her blood boil.
As Bethany watched Victor and Eden disappear into the restaurant, her thoughts turned inward. She wasn’t just concerned about Myra’s rash behavior; she had her own worries to contend with. If Eden was truly someone else, someone with a past that might bring unwanted complications, she would need to handle it carefully. The Gienger family had a reputation to uphold, and if Eden’s identity or her connection to the past were to come to light, it could ruin everything.
“Let’s not make things worse than they already are,” Bethany muttered under her breath. She turned to leave, her heels clicking on the floor, signaling the end of the conversation with Myra.
Myra, still simmering with frustration, followed reluctantly. “I don’t understand why we’re letting that woman slip away,” she grumbled, unable to let go of her animosity toward Eden.
Bethany glanced at her, her expression hardening. “Because sometimes, Myra, the best way to deal with something is to wait. And in this case, patience will serve us better than rash decisions. We’ll get our answers soon enough.”
Meanwhile, inside the restaurant, Eden and Victor were seated comfortably, the tension from the earlier encounter slowly melting away as they ordered their meal. Victor, ever the composed businessman, took a moment to study Eden’s face with a contemplative expression.
“You handled them well,” he said quietly, almost as an afterthought.
Eden met his gaze, her smile cool but sincere. “I’ve learned to not let people like that get under my skin. It’s the only way to move forward.”
Victor nodded, impressed by her maturity. “You’ve changed a lot since we first met.”
Eden shrugged lightly, “Some things, you can’t control. But you can learn to control how you react.”
As they settled into their meal, there was an unspoken understanding between them. Though the past still lingered, the future seemed brighter than ever. Whatever challenges lay ahead, Eden knew she had the strength to face them. And with someone like Victor by her side, perhaps the battle wouldn’t be so hard after all.
