Chapter 68
Eden looked at Victor with a concerned expression, her gaze softening as she saw the discomfort he was in. She stepped closer, her voice gentle yet insistent. “Victor, you don’t look well. Are you sure you’re alright?”
Victor forced a smile, the pain still evident in his eyes. “I’m fine, just a little tired,” he replied, though his voice lacked conviction. He didn’t want to burden her with his issues. The last thing he wanted was for her to worry about him.
But Eden wasn’t convinced. She had always been able to read him, even when he tried to hide his emotions behind a cold facade. “You don’t look fine, Victor. Maybe you should at least sit down for a while.”
Victor hesitated, his pride fighting against the urge to give in. But the pain in his chest was growing stronger, a constant reminder of the emotional and physical toll the day had taken on him. He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to regain his composure, but it was difficult. He could feel the tension in his body, the weight of everything he had been holding in.
Eden took a step forward, offering him a reassuring presence. “If you need help, I’m here,” she said quietly. There was no judgment in her voice, only genuine care.
Victor took a deep breath, his eyes meeting hers. For a moment, he let himself feel the comfort of her concern. His usual coldness seemed to melt away in her presence, even if just for a brief moment.
“I… I don’t want to trouble you,” he said, his voice low. “You have your own things to deal with.”
Eden smiled softly, shaking her head. “It’s no trouble at all. We’re friends, remember?”
Victor’s heart skipped a beat at her words. Friends. It had been a long time since anyone had offered him that kind of comfort without expecting anything in return. And in that moment, he realized just how much he appreciated her kindness.
“Thank you,” he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll be alright.”
Eden nodded, her eyes searching his face for any sign of discomfort. “If you’re sure… but please take care of yourself, okay?”
Victor gave her a small, grateful smile before nodding. “I will.”
They stood there for a moment, the wind rustling around them, but the tension between them seemed to ease. Victor knew that he wasn’t truly alone, not anymore. He had people who cared about him, even if it was hard for him to admit it. And maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t as lost as he had once thought.
