Chapter 52
Eden’s heart skipped a beat as she looked at the golden card in Ricky’s hand. It was a credit card, shiny and embossed with his name—Ricky Clement. She had seen these cards before, of course, but never in the hands of someone so small, so innocent. Her breath caught in her throat as she realized what it meant.
“Ricky… where did you get this?” she asked softly, her voice trembling a little.
Ricky’s big eyes were full of excitement as he answered innocently, “I earned it, Mom! From my acting. Mommy Abigail said it’s enough to buy a house. I want to help you!” His voice was full of pride, a small child’s earnest wish to make his mother happy.
Eden blinked rapidly, her eyes stinging as she tried to hold back tears. Her son, only six years old, was already thinking about taking care of her. He had no idea of the weight behind his words, but Eden felt it all the same. It was both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
She crouched down in front of him, gently taking the card from his small hand. “Ricky,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, “You don’t need to worry about me. I’m okay. You’re the most important thing in my life. I’m so proud of you, but I don’t want you to feel like you have to take care of me.”
Ricky shook his head vigorously. “But Mom, I want to help! I don’t want you to be sad anymore. If we buy a house, you won’t be lonely. We can live together, just the three of us!”
Tears welled up in Eden’s eyes as she pulled him into a tight embrace. “My sweet boy,” she murmured, holding him close. “You’re already helping me more than you’ll ever know. I’m so lucky to have you.”
For a moment, everything else faded—the worries about Victor, the complicated feelings about Jasper, the long hours she spent working to keep everything afloat. In this moment, with her son in her arms, there was nothing but love.
Ricky pulled away slightly, looking up at her with an innocent smile. “Can we go play together after my bath? You promised!”
Eden wiped her eyes quickly, smiling through her tears. “Of course we can, darling. Let’s get you bathed, and then we’ll have some fun. Just you and me.”
As Ricky ran off to the bathroom, Eden stood there for a moment, holding the golden card in her hand, deep in thought. She felt a rush of emotions—pride for her son, but also a deep sense of guilt. Ricky had been through so much, yet he was already trying to take on so much responsibility. It was hard to imagine that, just a few years ago, she had been a single mother struggling to make ends meet. Now, her son, who should have been carefree, was offering to help her buy a house.
The weight of the world was always on her shoulders, but she couldn’t help but smile. She had Ricky. And with him by her side, maybe she didn’t need anything else.
She placed the golden card on the kitchen counter, feeling its weight once more. Perhaps she wouldn’t need to buy a house just yet, but one thing was for sure—she would do whatever it took to make sure Ricky never felt the weight of the world on his small shoulders. He deserved a life full of love, joy, and freedom from worry.
She walked to the bathroom door, smiling as she heard Ricky humming to himself, his little voice echoing through the apartment. Despite everything, there was hope. There was always hope.
