Chapter 50
Jasper’s smile softened as he looked at Eden, his eyes warm with affection and a hint of playful amusement. He gently nudged her with his elbow as she tried to catch up, still fuming from their little spat.
“Okay, okay,” he said, his voice teasing, “no more laughing. But seriously, Eden, you’re being dramatic. I wasn’t bullying you. You know how I am.”
Eden shot him a half-serious, half-amused look. “I’m not dramatic! You just love making fun of me.”
Jasper chuckled softly, his gaze never leaving her. “I can’t help it. You’re so easy to tease.” He reached over and ruffled her hair lightly, and Eden swatted at his hand in mock annoyance.
They continued walking through the dimly lit street, the sounds of the bustling city around them mixing with the lighthearted bickering that only seemed to draw them closer. For all the seriousness in their lives, moments like these were precious, when the world outside felt far away and it was just the two of them, laughing and teasing.
“You know,” Jasper said as they slowed down, “we could keep searching for a place, but I think we’re both ready for a break. How about I pick you up in the morning, like I said? A fresh start tomorrow.”
Eden nodded, her earlier frustration fading as she caught the warmth in his eyes. “Alright,” she agreed, a small smile tugging at her lips. “We’ll get breakfast first. But you better not pick a place that’s too far from where I live this time. I’m not walking around Gate City all day again.”
Jasper grinned, pulling her gently to the side as they reached the corner of the street. “Deal. I’ll make sure it’s worth the wait.”
For a brief moment, Eden felt the ease of the conversation, the relief of not having to be anything but herself. Jasper’s presence had a way of grounding her, making even the most tiring day feel lighter.
As they stood there, the city lights casting a glow on their faces, Eden realized that despite the ongoing struggles and the uncertainty of what lay ahead, this—being with Jasper, sharing these simple moments—felt like something real, something she could hold onto.
She glanced up at him, her eyes softening. “Thanks again, Jasper. You’re always there when I need you.”
Jasper gave her a sincere, yet playful smile. “Always, Eden. You know I’ve got your back.”
And with that, they continued their walk, the chatter of the city fading into the background as the bond between them deepened with every step.
