Chapter 49
Vincent’s expression darkened as his mind spun with resentment and ambition. His mother’s words fueled the fire inside him. The thought of Victor continually outshining him in every aspect, despite all the years he had spent trying to earn his place, made Vincent feel inferior. He was determined to change that.
“Mom, your idea is brilliant!” Vincent said, the malice in his tone barely concealed. “We’ll stick to the plan. This time, I will make sure that I come out on top.”
Rebecca’s smile was cool and calculating, her gaze fixed with a steely intensity. “Victor may be aloof, but there are cracks in his armor. He’s showing interest in women now, something we haven’t seen before. This new design director, if she’s the one he’s focused on, could be the perfect leverage for us.”
Vincent paused, the wheels turning in his mind. He had always been jealous of Victor’s success, his charisma, and his ability to command attention. But it was the sense of invincibility that made Vincent want to see him fall from grace.
“Mom, Haven might not be the most ideal match,” he remarked coldly, “but she’s still a pawn in our game. She’ll play her part. The Clement family has always looked down on me, but once I marry Haven, they’ll have no choice but to reconsider.”
Rebecca’s eyes narrowed as she observed her son’s shifting emotions. “You’re right. Haven’s just a stepping stone, but remember, it’s not about her. It’s about what she represents. The Clement family might despise us now, but once we have their daughter, their loyalty will shift.”
Vincent, still fuming about Haven’s rejection, muttered under his breath, “She thinks she’s too good for me, doesn’t she? Just wait until I have her under my thumb.”
Rebecca’s voice turned sharper, a glint of mockery in her tone. “Vincent, no matter what you think, Haven’s role is important. She’s a bridge, not the end goal. Don’t get too caught up in petty emotions. And remember, no one else can say these things to you. Only I can be this honest.”
Vincent bristled, but he knew his mother was right. The truth hurt, but he had to keep his eye on the bigger picture. He forced a smile, hiding his anger behind it. “Understood, Mom. Let’s get this over with.”
Meanwhile, Eden and Jasper were strolling through the night, having spent the day looking for a place to call home. Despite the beautiful neon lights that lit up the city, Eden couldn’t help but feel discontented. Jasper, always the optimist, seemed worn out from the long search.
“Jasper, I don’t get it,” Eden said, her voice laced with frustration. “You’ve been stressing over buying a house for so long, and now that you can actually afford one, nothing feels right. We’ve been out the whole day, and yet, we still haven’t found a suitable place.”
Jasper sighed, wiping his brow. “I know, Eden. It’s just… I thought when I finally had the money, it would be easier. But it feels like every place we’ve seen just doesn’t feel like home. There’s always something missing.”
Eden’s eyes softened, but she didn’t know what to say. She understood the weight of the decision, the pressure of finally making it in life but not quite finding where you belong. They both had their dreams, but sometimes it felt like they were constantly running in circles, unable to catch a break.
“Let’s keep looking,” Eden said quietly. “The right place will come along eventually. You’ll know when it’s the one.”
Jasper nodded, grateful for her calm support. “Thanks, Eden. I guess I just needed to hear that.”
They continued their walk, the city bustling around them, yet for a moment, they felt like the only two people in the world. Even amidst all the noise, they were still searching for something—something real, something lasting.
And unbeknownst to them, the forces that shaped their lives were moving in directions that would soon intertwine with the power struggles and the unresolved tensions of the Alwynn and Clement families. The journey was only just beginning.
