Chapter 41
Eden’s feet were sore from all the walking, but she was determined to find the perfect place. The thought of finally settling into a home of her own, especially with her children coming soon, kept her going despite her exhaustion. The night had been long, but she knew there was still more to do.
“Jasper, I don’t know if I can look at another house today,” she said, a playful sigh escaping her lips. “My feet are killing me!”
Jasper laughed lightly, his concern for her visible in the way he watched her. “How about we grab something quick to eat? You deserve a little break after all this. We can come back tomorrow and keep searching.”
Eden smiled, grateful for his support. “That sounds perfect.”
The two of them found a small snack bar nearby. The bustling city was quieter now, with the soft hum of streetlights and distant conversations filling the air. They found a small table and sat down, both of them looking forward to something warm to eat.
Jasper, ever the light-hearted one, looked at Eden with a mischievous grin. “You know, if we keep eating snacks like this, we’ll never fit into our dream homes,” he teased.
Eden chuckled softly, shaking her head. “Don’t worry, I’ll burn it all off running after houses tomorrow.”
They shared a light meal together, the quiet of the night allowing them to talk more freely. As they ate, Eden found herself relaxing, the weight of her responsibilities slightly eased by Jasper’s presence. She knew he was a good friend—one who cared for her deeply, even if it was a type of care she couldn’t fully return.
After the meal, they walked back to the car, both of them satisfied with the brief pause in the busyness of the day. Eden couldn’t help but feel a slight sense of comfort in the small moments they shared, though the heaviness in her heart remained.
As they got into the car and drove back, Eden’s thoughts drifted back to the Gienger family. She couldn’t escape the images of Myra and Bethany from earlier that night, their faces still fresh in her mind. What was it about them that still haunted her after all these years?
Jasper glanced over at her as the car moved smoothly through the streets. “Eden, are you alright?” he asked softly, noticing the shift in her mood.
She looked at him, giving him a small, reassuring smile. “Yeah, just thinking,” she replied, her voice thoughtful. “I’ll be fine.”
Jasper didn’t press her further, but he could sense there was something deeper bothering her. He just hoped that, in time, she would find the peace she needed.
As the city passed by, both of them lost in their thoughts, Eden knew tomorrow would be another challenge. But for tonight, at least, she had Jasper by her side, and that gave her a bit of comfort as she faced the uncertainties ahead.
