Chapter 39
Victor’s fingers tightened around his phone as the realization hit him like a sudden storm. His thoughts raced, connecting dots that had once been scattered and unclear. The conversation with Anson lingered in his mind, the mention of Cyan Gienger, the drugged night, and the mysterious disappearance. It all felt like a puzzle he had been unknowingly trying to solve for years.
He paused for a moment before answering Anson, his voice unusually serious. “Eden Bleu,” he said, his tone laced with a hint of urgency. “I asked you to check if Eden knows anyone from the Gienger family.”
Anson was silent for a moment on the other end of the line, his mind processing the new information. “Wait… are you saying you suspect Eden is somehow connected to the Gienger family? That would mean—”
Victor didn’t wait for him to finish. “I don’t know yet, but I need to find out. I’m starting to think that Eden Bleu might be Cyan Gienger—or at least, connected to her in some way.” His words were slow, deliberate, as if he were trying to convince himself more than Anson.
Anson’s voice softened, a hint of understanding in his tone. “Victor… are you sure about this? If Eden is somehow tied to the Gienger family, then that could change everything.”
Victor gritted his teeth, his mind still racing. “I don’t know. But the way she reacted when she saw Myra and Bethany… there’s something in her past she’s running from. I need to know the truth.”
Anson’s tone shifted to one of caution. “I’ll look into it more when I get back, but it’s not going to be easy. Eden might not even know the full truth herself.”
Victor’s gaze was distant as he considered Anson’s words. “I know. But if there’s a connection to that night… to Cyan, we can’t ignore it.”
With that, Victor ended the call and stood in the hallway, deep in thought. Everything he knew about Eden now seemed to be built on a shaky foundation. Was she truly just a woman with a new life in River City, or was there something more to her story—a hidden connection to the past that could tear apart everything she had worked so hard to build?
As he turned to leave, Victor’s mind kept circling back to Eden’s trembling voice, her fear, and the way she had sought refuge in his arms just moments before. Whatever her past was, he knew one thing for sure: she was hiding something, and he was determined to uncover it.
Meanwhile, Eden was walking swiftly through the restaurant, trying to regain her composure after the unsettling encounter with Myra and Bethany. The encounter had left her shaken, and she felt as though the walls were closing in around her.
As she stepped outside into the cool night air, Eden took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing thoughts. She needed to focus—she couldn’t afford to let her emotions take over. Her children were depending on her. Her search for answers, for the truth about her birth family, was just beginning, and she couldn’t let the shadows from her past haunt her any longer.
But as she walked down the street, Eden’s mind kept returning to Victor. She had always been cautious around men, but there was something about him that both intrigued and unsettled her. She knew he wasn’t just the cold, calculating businessman he appeared to be. There was something more to him—something deeper. And the way he had protected her from Myra and Bethany, the way he had stepped in without hesitation… it made her wonder if he too had his own secrets.
For now, though, Eden couldn’t afford to think about Victor. She needed to focus on what lay ahead: finding a house for her children, securing a future for them, and uncovering the truth about her own past—no matter how painful it might be.
As Eden walked through the streets, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her past and present were about to collide in a way she hadn’t anticipated. And Victor Alwynn—whether she liked it or not—seemed to be playing a bigger role in that collision than she had ever imagined.
