Chapter 2
Cyan stood frozen in the doorway, her hand gripping the doorknob as she overheard the conversation from inside. Through the glass, she could see Myra Gienger, poised and elegant like a princess, but there was a chilling darkness in her eyes, a coldness that Cyan had never seen before.
“Rara, when she comes back, just calm her down. That idiot will listen to anything we say. She’s always been obedient—too obedient. We’ve spent twelve years raising her. Now it’s time to get something out of it, piece by piece.”
The words struck Cyan like a blow to the chest. Her mother, the one she had always admired, the woman she had thought of as graceful and loving, had turned out to be a cruel and manipulative figure.
Myra’s voice was laced with venom as she continued. “Mum, it’s a good thing your car hit her all those years ago. We thought she was dead and were going to bury her, but she survived, and with her memory gone, we were able to make use of her. It was a perfect decision.”
Cyan’s breath caught in her throat. The woman she had trusted, the mother she had loved—she had never known such malice could lie behind her actions. Cyan had always believed she was an orphan, someone taken in by the Gienger family after a tragic accident. But now, she realized the truth was far darker.
“Don’t let her remember, though,” Mrs. Gienger’s voice was cold and dismissive. “We told her we adopted her from the orphanage to avoid trouble. She was dressed well when we found her, so she must be from a wealthy family. We’ve done well with her.”
Cyan’s head spun as the words hit her like a tidal wave. All these years, she had lived her life in the shadow of their expectations, trying desperately to earn her mother’s affection, but all along, she had been a pawn in their cruel game.
Tears blurred her vision as her heart shattered. Her mother, the woman who had nurtured her, had only seen her as a means to an end. Myra, the younger sister she had loved and protected, had turned out to be just as cold and calculating. And her father, who had always been distant, was nothing more than a silent accomplice in this betrayal.
Cyan couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. The world around her felt like it was crumbling. Her body trembled as her heart sank into despair. She had nothing left. No family, no love, no place to belong.
With the pain of her broken world pressing down on her, Cyan fled from the mansion, her steps frantic, her mind lost in the overwhelming flood of emotions. The streets were quiet in the early morning mist, the air sharp and biting against her skin.
Tears streamed down her face, but she barely noticed. She was consumed by sorrow, by the bitter realization that everything she had believed about her life had been a lie. The mother she had revered, the sister she had cherished—both had betrayed her in the most painful way possible.
Lost in her own grief, Cyan didn’t notice the approaching car until it was almost too late.
A red sports car roared down the empty street, tires screeching as the driver slammed on the brakes. Time seemed to freeze as Cyan’s tear-filled eyes widened in panic, but it was too late. The impact was sudden and forceful, sending her body flying into the air.
She crashed to the ground, her vision blurring, blood pooling around her as her body lay motionless. A wave of numbness washed over her, and as she struggled to stay conscious, she saw a figure approach.
In that moment, Cyan smiled, though it was a smile tinged with despair. The weight of her sorrow, the feeling of being betrayed by everyone she had trusted, was too much. She had nothing left to hold on to. Slowly, her eyes closed as tears mingled with the cold, the world around her slipping into darkness.
