Chapter 29
Victor’s gaze lingered on Eden, taking in her delicate features as she focused on her phone. The sight of her, even in such a simple moment, drew his attention in ways he couldn’t explain. There was something about her that made his heart stir, a connection he hadn’t felt with anyone in a long time.
His thoughts briefly drifted back to the earlier exchange with Haven and Delmont. He had made his position clear, but the tension between them was undeniable. He wasn’t interested in the marriage arrangement, and his words had been meant to drive that point home. But he couldn’t help but wonder if he had been too blunt. The look on Haven’s face when he mentioned Eden—it was clear that Haven had hoped for something different. Perhaps, Victor mused, he should have been more considerate of her feelings.
But then his eyes fell back on Eden, and the thoughts faded. She was there, right in front of him, and he was more focused on her than anyone else in the room. There was a kind of quiet beauty to her that had drawn him in since the moment they had met again. He couldn’t explain it, but it felt like she had always been a part of his world, even when he hadn’t known her.
As the last of the group left, Victor stood up, pushing away the fleeting doubts in his mind. He walked over to Eden, who was still engrossed in her phone. He watched as she typed something, her fingers moving with practiced precision.
“Eden,” Victor said, his voice low. She looked up at him, her expression soft but alert.
“Yes, Mr. Alwynn?” she asked, a hint of curiosity in her eyes.
“I hope you’re not too tired,” he said with a gentle smile, his tone a little more relaxed than before. “It’s been a long night, but if you’d like, I could accompany you back to your place. It’s late, and I’d feel better knowing you’re safe.”
Eden hesitated for a moment, her gaze flickering between Victor and her phone. She wasn’t sure if it was appropriate to accept his offer, but the truth was, she felt a strange comfort in his presence. She was still processing the night—the unexpected appearance of Haven and Delmont, the tension that had filled the room—but there was something reassuring about Victor’s steady demeanor.
“That would be nice,” Eden said after a beat, her smile warm. “I’d appreciate it.”
Victor’s eyes softened, his smile deepening. “It’s settled then. I’ll make sure you get home safely.”
The two of them left the karaoke lounge together, the cool night air greeting them as they stepped outside. Victor led her to his car, and for the first time in a while, Eden felt a sense of calm wash over her. Even though there were still many questions swirling in her mind, for now, it felt good to just be in the moment, walking alongside him in the quiet of the night.
As they drove through the city, Eden glanced out the window, her thoughts drifting. There was so much about her life that still felt uncertain, but with Victor at her side, it didn’t seem so daunting. In some ways, it felt like the pieces of her past and present were slowly coming together, whether she was ready for it or not.
The car turned a corner, and Victor’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Eden,” he said softly, catching her attention. “I know tonight was a little… unexpected. I want you to know that you’re more than just a new employee to me. I respect you, and I’m glad you’re here.”
Eden’s heart skipped a beat, and she met his gaze, finding sincerity in his eyes. The words were simple, but they carried weight, and for the first time that night, Eden felt like perhaps she wasn’t as alone as she had once believed.
