Eden’s fingers hovered over her phone as she read Jasper’s message, her heart heavy with a sense of guilt she couldn’t shake off. She knew how much Jasper had worked to establish himself in Gate City, and now, he was willing to follow her wherever she went. The weight of that commitment made her feel even more torn. She didn’t want to be the reason he would give up his hard-earned success. It wasn’t fair to him.
Victor, who had been silently observing Eden, noticed the subtle change in her expression. He could see the conflict in her eyes, the weight she carried, though he had no idea what exactly was causing it. But the way her shoulders tensed and the way her fingers fidgeted with her phone made it clear that something was on her mind.
His thoughts were interrupted when Lucian parked the car in front of the restaurant. The sound of the engine turning off seemed to snap the air of tension inside the car. Victor’s mind was still lingering on Eden’s words and the way she resembled someone he’d lost long ago. A part of him, deep down, knew that the path ahead would be complicated. Yet, he couldn’t stop himself from wanting to get closer to her. There was a pull, an unexplainable connection that he couldn’t ignore.
Eden put her phone down and glanced out the window, trying to calm her racing thoughts. The truth was, she wasn’t sure what to do. Jasper’s words were comforting, but they only served to add to the already heavy burden she felt. She had never wanted to be the center of someone else’s sacrifices, especially not when it came to someone like Jasper, who had so much potential.
She took a deep breath as the car came to a complete stop, trying to push aside the worry that clouded her thoughts. She wasn’t sure what she would find at the dinner, but she knew one thing for sure—Victor Alwynn’s presence would only make things more complicated.
