Begging on His Knees
Matthew had meticulously prepared everything in this house, transforming it into what he believed was a love nest. Yet, I never imagined that one day I would claim it as my own. This place, once a symbol of our supposed new life, had become the beginning of my new existence—one without him.
I smiled bitterly, telling myself this was Matthew’s gift. Not for our anniversary, but as a silent witness to the end of our marriage.
Ava, blissfully unaware of the heavy weight on my heart, was ecstatic when I told her this was our new home. She ran around joyfully, oblivious to the kind of pain that burdened adults.
That night, after Ava had drifted into sleep, Matthew came over. He looked clean, his clothes neat, but his face bore bruises from a recent beating. His appearance told a story of someone who had tried and failed to fight for something that was slipping away.
He ignored Ivanna entirely, stepping forward toward me, and dropped to his knees. This wasn’t the first time I had seen him beg, and I wasn’t sure how many more times I could bear it.
I looked at him, a mix of disdain and exhaustion weighing on me. “If you intend to repeat your plea, stop. You can leave now,” I said coldly.
“Honey, please don’t say that,” he begged, sounding like a misbehaving child. “Where can I go? I want to be where you are—you’re my home.”
His words turned my stomach. I scoffed at him, my voice dripping with disdain. “Do you think you can persuade me? We’ve been together for almost ten years. Tell me, which of your words can I trust? You swore you’d change. You told me we could go back to the way things were.”
I paused, my heart aching as I relived the horror of the evening. “You planned this grand event, pretending to mark the start of our new life, but you abandoned a room full of guests to sleep with your sister. How desperate are you, Matthew?”
The inner turmoil inside me was unbearable, but I kept my composure. “Have you ever thought about how I had to force a smile and entertain your guests, pretending everything was fine? What am I to you?”
Matthew took a step toward me, but I raised my voice, cutting him off. “Stay away! Don’t touch me, you disgusting bastard!”
He froze, as if the gravity of the situation finally hit him.
I stood up, ready to leave him, but before I could move, he rose and embraced me, pulling me in for a kiss. I instinctively kneed him in the groin. The scream that followed only brought me a hollow sense of justice.
Ivanna, who had been poised to help, froze at the sound of Matthew’s cry. He knelt, clutching his groin in agony. I felt no sympathy. My gaze was steely as I declared, “I want a divorce.”
Matthew’s face turned pale. “Y–You… What did you say?”
I repeated, my voice firm and unwavering, “No matter how I say it, I mean the same thing. Matthew, we’re getting a divorce.”
His desperation was palpable as he scrambled for any last shred of hope. “Chloe, don’t even think about it. I won’t divorce you,” he pleaded, his face red from exertion, sweat dripping down his forehead. “I just lost control. I promise I’ll change.”
He took a deep breath, gathering his resolve, but his words only disgusted me further. “But I can’t be without you, our daughter, and this family! I’ll be better to you and her in the future. She can’t grow up without a complete family!”
I laughed bitterly. “This family hasn’t been complete since you slept with her! Do you honestly think I’m a fool you can manipulate at will? You told me to put on a show to dispel rumors, but the truth is out now. You’re wasting our time, Matthew. Leave.”
His face stiffened, but he regained his composure, still clinging to his last attempt to salvage his dignity.
“Chloe, give me one more chance to explain!” he begged, his voice cracking under the weight of his desperation.
“Explain?” I sneered, unable to contain my revulsion. “Matthew, don’t disgust me any further. I think the entire town saw what happened. I advise you to save what’s left of your dignity and be a man.”
Tears welled in my eyes, but I refused to let him see me break. He no longer had the strength to argue.
Just as I turned away, Ivanna spoke up. “Matthew, you’ve made the headlines!”
His eyes widened in horror, and in that moment, I knew everything had changed. There was no turning back from this.
