Incredible Assistance
Matthew started speaking, but his confidence faltered, and he trailed off, leaving his words hanging in the air. I continued with my task in silence, my mind racing, unsure how to react. After all, I was the victim in this situation, and it would be illogical for me to offer him any advice or help.
Suddenly, there was a loud knock at the door. Matthew, looking both surprised and wary, hurried to open it. To our shock, Ivanna entered, slamming the door behind her with a force that echoed in the quiet room. She stood in front of Matthew, fuming with anger.
“You’re a heartless bastard!” Ivanna shouted, her voice shaking with emotion. “I don’t even know what to say right now!”
Matthew, who knew Ivanna’s fiery temperament well, remained quiet. He wasn’t surprised by her outburst—she had always been a fierce protector of me. His head dropped in shame as Ivanna continued, her voice rising in indignation.
“Didn’t I tell you not to fool around behind Chlo’s back? Do you remember what you promised me?” Ivanna’s words were cutting, her frustration palpable. “How could you do that to her?! She moved to Foswood and struggled with you all these years. You’re everything to her, and yet you never considered how hurt she’d be when you slept with that woman last night.”
Matthew kept his eyes on the floor, muttering, “I know I was wrong.”
Ivanna wasn’t done. “Can’t you see how much better your wife is than that woman?” She turned to me, her anger fading into concern. “Chlo, why didn’t you tell me about this? Everyone’s talking about you two, but you’re doing nothing. Am I not your best friend anymore?”
Ivanna’s dramatic performance nearly made me laugh. The way she was throwing herself into her role as a defender made her seem like she could easily star in a movie. In fact, her intervention had shifted the energy in the room, adding an unexpected twist to the situation.
I placed the knife I was holding onto the cutting board with a thud, looking up at Ivanna. “How would I even begin to discuss this?” I asked, my voice cracking. “I feel humiliated. How could I tell you about this? I always thought Matthew wasn’t like other men, but now, everyone in Foswood knows he’s cheating on me.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I crouched, sobbing uncontrollably. Ivanna watched, her face a mixture of concern and shock, unsure of how to react.
Immediately, Matthew rushed into the kitchen, lifting me up into his arms, murmuring, “I’m sorry, Chlo.” His apology was hollow, but he wasn’t about to let me fall apart in front of Ivanna.
Ivanna, who was watching the scene with wide eyes, seemed momentarily stunned by my emotional performance. After a long pause, she sighed, breaking the tension. “What’s the point of you two crying like this?”
Matthew’s face turned red with embarrassment, and he looked at Ivanna, unsure how to respond.
Ivanna wasn’t deterred. “Matthew, we must devise a plan to discredit the news, right?” Her words hit home, and Matthew’s eyes seemed to light up with realization. The wheels in his head were turning.
Ivanna wasn’t done. “Hey, why are you still standing there? Come out of the kitchen! Matthew, just order some takeout. I’m starving. Given your current moods, I wouldn’t dare eat the food you cook.”
Her suggestion was blunt, but effective. “Let’s enjoy some good food while we discuss things. A good meal can always make us feel better.”
Matthew quickly complied, pulling out his phone to place an order for takeout. As the minutes passed, I found myself beside him at the table. He tried to soothe me, speaking in gentle tones, as if that would undo everything that had happened.
I couldn’t help but admire Ivanna’s quick thinking. Her idea to formulate a plan was just what I needed at this critical moment. Only she could say the things I couldn’t, things that Matthew wouldn’t dare ignore. Despite his cunning nature, it was clear that his defenses were at their weakest now, and I was in the perfect position to make my next move.
