All Against One
Melanie’s resilience was both impressive and infuriating. Despite everything, she had the audacity to stand there, smug and unapologetic. I couldn’t help but think how shameless she was to talk as if none of this mattered to her.
“Go ahead,” I said, my voice cold. “I’m sure you never lack good news, considering how shameless you are.”
I met her gaze, daring her to say more, but it was Henry who spoke up first. “Stop being stubborn. You’re equally responsible in this situation. Don’t think everyone owes you something!” His words caught me off guard, and for a moment, I didn’t know how to respond.
Just then, Matthew entered the room. He took in the scene—me holding Ava, everyone tense and silent—and his eyes softened when he saw me. “Let’s go home,” he said, his tone firm, but not harsh.
“Matt, why are you in such a hurry to leave?” Melanie sneered, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “I haven’t told Chloe the good news yet.” She paused, eyeing Matthew with a twisted smile. “Do you even want to go home with her now? My child needs a father, too.”
Her words struck like a punch to the gut. My mind went blank, and for a moment, the room spun. My head throbbed, and I swayed. Matthew rushed to my side, steadying me.
“Honey,” he murmured, concern flashing across his face.
I looked up at him, unable to process what Melanie had just said. “Her child?” My voice shook, barely above a whisper.
Matthew hesitated, unable to look me in the eye. My heart sank, and in that moment, I knew Melanie’s words were true. I could feel the walls closing in around me.
I couldn’t control the emotions that bubbled up. “The child… belongs to you two?” I asked, barely able to speak through the lump in my throat.
Henry’s voice was thick with disdain as he shamelessly stated, “Mel and Matt aren’t blood-related siblings, so they can have as many kids as they want. Don’t make this into a big deal, and stop acting like my family owes you something.”
I felt the air in the room grow heavier, suffocating me. “Solve it internally?” I asked, my voice rising with disbelief. “How do you plan on solving this?”
The room fell silent, the weight of his words sinking in. I turned to Matthew, who stood there, unable to meet my eyes. “Tell me, Matthew,” I said, my voice breaking. “How do you propose we handle this internally?”
Ava, sensing my distress, tightened her grip on my leg and called out to me, “Mommy…”
Henry scoffed, his voice dripping with contempt. “What are you yelling about? Matthew, we’ve been watching you for years. You’ve always fawned over her. Who does she think she is? She only contributed some funds to start the business. Chloe, stop thinking we should be forever grateful to you just because of that. Would your business run so smoothly if it weren’t for my son? Divorce her, Matthew, and give her half the assets. Chloe, you don’t have the right to stay in that new house, because my son worked hard to pay for it. Move out, and we’ll discuss the rest later.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “You want me to give up the apartment?” I asked, incredulous. I looked directly at Henry. “Don’t even think about it.”
It was unbelievable. Henry was treating me like the mistress trying to take someone else’s property, while he was treating Melanie as Matthew’s rightful wife.
“Chlo, don’t be so… impulsive,” Matthew mumbled, his tone defensive. “Let’s all stay calm.”
“Calm?” I snapped. “How can I stay calm? Is this what you all agree on?”
I glanced at Grace, but she refused to meet my gaze. The silence between us was deafening.
“All right,” I said, my voice cold and final. “Just wait for it, then.”
I grabbed Ava’s hand and turned to leave, but the tension in the room was unbearable. I couldn’t reason with any of them anymore.
“We can get a divorce,” I said, my voice trembling with barely contained rage. “But Matthew will leave this marriage with nothing!”
“What are you saying?” Henry exploded, jumping to his feet. “Matthew, deal with her! She’s too arrogant!”
I shot back, “He needs the balls to do that! You already think this is arrogant, but here’s some news for you—your whole family is despicable. No wonder you have a son like him. After all, like father, like son.”
Suddenly, everything seemed to blur. Something hit me hard, and before I could fully process it, I felt a sharp sting on my cheek. My palm pressed to my face in disbelief. I had been slapped.
