Chapter_89
Hurt and Heartbroken
Matthew’s scream rang through the room, desperate and guttural, but I couldn’t bring myself to look back. I had already made my decision. However, just as I was about to step away, a tall figure blocked my path. Without warning, Matthew kneeled before me, his body hitting the floor with a loud thud.
“Chloe, please don’t leave! I was a fool for doing all those things,” Matthew begged, his voice full of guilt as he grabbed my hand. His eyes, usually full of arrogance, were now filled with remorse. “Honey, please forgive me! I–I’ll change! I won’t repeat those stupid mistakes. Let’s start over!”
He slapped himself in frustration, his desperation palpable. His words were weak, but they cut through me. Did he think a few words could undo everything?
Before I could process his plea, Melanie rushed over and grabbed his arm, her voice shrill. “Matt, what about your promise to divorce her? You said you’d leave her once we secure the ATL Empire project. You told me you never loved her, right? You only married her for our family’s future. Since she knows everything, there’s nothing to fear now.”
My gaze shot over to Matthew, my anger flaring. I glared at him and asked, “Is that what you said?”
“Don’t listen to her nonsense!” Matthew shouted, turning toward me. “I won’t leave you. We still have Ava. You and Ava are my family. Let’s start over!”
Melanie, her voice thick with frustration, questioned him again. “Matt, what are you afraid of? Can you honestly say you don’t want me anymore?”
Matthew, in his desperation, shoved Melanie away and turned back to me, falling to his knees again. His voice shook with a mixture of guilt and pleading. “Honey…”
I crossed my arms and stared down at him. “How do you plan to start over, Matthew?”
He looked up at me, eyes filled with determination. “I’ll do anything for you,” he vowed, his voice soft but resolute.
I took a deep breath, my voice cold. “Okay, transfer the house, the car, and all of Tanum Corporation’s assets to my name again. Otherwise, I’ll do what I said.”
Matthew froze, his face a mixture of shock and panic. Before he could respond, Melanie rushed forward and shoved me, sending me off balance. I stumbled backward, my head slamming against the corner of the table. A sharp, searing pain shot through my forehead, and blood began to pour down my face.
The room fell into chaos as I crumpled to the floor. Melanie stood there, glaring at me. “That bitch is just faking it!” she spat.
Matthew’s eyes widened in panic. His body trembled as he turned to Melanie, his voice shaking with anger. “Get out!” he shouted, slapping her across the face. He then rushed to my side, his hands hovering over me as if unsure of what to do.
“H–Honey, I–” Matthew stuttered, his guilt apparent.
Ivanna, furious, cursed under her breath. “Damn it, Matthew! Take her to the hospital!”
Without further hesitation, Matthew scooped me up, his hands trembling as he rushed me to the hospital.
The rest of the night was a blur. The pain from my head injury drained me, both physically and emotionally. I didn’t want to speak to anyone, didn’t want to see anyone. I simply wanted rest.
Matthew stayed by my side throughout the night, but I didn’t utter a word to him. I didn’t even look at him. When the morning came, he left, but not before Grace came by to drop off some food. I didn’t want to see him, and I didn’t want to hear his excuses. After everything, I had lost all hope in him.
But then, later that evening, I heard the soft creak of the door, and my heart sank. I turned to see Matthew standing in the doorway, holding Ava in his arms.
At that moment, I realized his true intentions. He was using Ava to manipulate me, to get what he wanted. I couldn’t believe he would sink so low, using our daughter in this twisted game for his selfish desires.
Ava, who had been so cheerful earlier, burst into tears the moment she saw the bandage around my head. “Mommy!” she cried, her voice filled with distress.
I felt my anger flare up once more, but I couldn’t act on it. Not in front of Ava. I couldn’t risk scaring her. She was already frightened enough as it was.
Deep down, I knew Matthew wasn’t going to meet my demands. He had moved the assets around, and I was sure he wasn’t going to readily transfer everything back to my name. He wasn’t going to give up the power he had worked so hard to secure.
Just as one crisis seemed to fade away, another had emerged, and I found myself trapped once more in the web of his lies and manipulation.
