To Get What’s Coming
Melanie was unbearable, like a devil masquerading as a human. She pushed every button, taunting me with every word. I was on the verge of losing control, but I held back, fighting every instinct that screamed at me to retaliate. The air felt thick with her malice, and every word she spoke grated against my nerves.
“Secrets? Why would someone as shameless as you still have secrets?” I shot back, my voice tight with restraint.
“Oh, Chloe,” she said, her voice dripping with mockery. “I know you’re a smart woman. I’ve sent you many lovely photos, but you’ve ignored them. Why are you still pretending to be clueless in front of my brother? Are you afraid of leaving him?” She took a slow sip from her glass, her smile wicked, like she had all the power in the room.
I was teetering on the edge. It was impossible to control the fury building inside me, but I had to keep it together. Melanie was playing a dangerous game, and I wasn’t going to let her see the cracks in my armor.
“Come on, have a drink to calm your nerves!” she coaxed with a smirk, watching me warily. “Are you afraid of me? It’s just a bottle of wine. I’m drinking it myself, so what’s there to be scared of?”
Her mocking tone only made my blood boil. But I refused to give her the satisfaction of seeing me crack. “Well, suit yourself,” she said nonchalantly, clearly bored with my resistance. Then, she leaned in closer, and I could feel the venom in her next words before she even spoke them.
“Did you know?” she began, her voice lowering to a whisper, “Matt and I had our first time right here.”
My brain went numb. I had wondered how they’d become involved, but hearing it out of her mouth was unbearable. The words hit me like a slap, and my head spun. My whole body shook as I tried to process the revelation. My vision blurred, my throat constricting. I had to drink just to hold myself together, my hand shaking as I grabbed the glass and downed the wine in a single gulp.
Melanie burst into laughter—high-pitched and shrill, as if she’d just won some twisted victory. “Hahaha, that’s right, my dear sister-in-law! It feels great, doesn’t it? You should have some guts if you know Matt is seeing someone else. You should leave him. Why are you still staying?”
I felt sick. I was shaking, but not from fear. No, it was from rage, disgust, and the overwhelming realization that Matthew had betrayed me in ways I could hardly comprehend. And this… this vile woman was flaunting it in my face.
She laughed again, that sound so grating it almost drove me insane. “Do as you please. It doesn’t matter. You can continue being Mrs. Murphy, and we’ll do whatever we want. Let me assure you, he’ll never leave me.”
Her words struck like a cruel knife. She knew him too well, used him like a puppet. I was just the backdrop in their twisted play.
“Since that first time here, he couldn’t stay away from me,” she taunted, her voice dripping with glee. “He can’t resist, but you wouldn’t know, would you?”
I snapped. “You’re shameless, Melanie. He’s your brother, yet you’re taking advantage of him. There are plenty of men out there!” My voice cracked with anger. “You’re a shameless demon!”
She only smirked, unfazed. “Why does it matter? All of Matt’s money is mine,” she said, flaunting it. “Oh, I bought a blue sports car. I said I wanted it, and Matt got it for me. I’m also moving to a new place. My brother said she’s nothing!”
My mind raced, everything spinning. It was like she was rubbing salt in an open wound, each word cutting deeper than the last. I could feel my heart race, my entire body boiling with fury.
“Karma is coming for you, so don’t be so smug. You’re not getting a happy ending!” I shouted, not caring anymore.
Melanie just laughed again, that malicious glint in her eyes never leaving her. “Haha, maybe not,” she taunted. “But I’m going to let you taste that intoxicating feeling. Then you won’t curse me anymore!”
A shiver ran down my spine as she got up, her laughter still ringing in my ears. She walked toward the door, and that’s when I saw them. Three burly men entered the room, and my heart dropped. Panic shot through me as I realized too late what was happening.
My head was spinning even more now, and I could feel an odd, feverish sensation washing over me. It wasn’t just the wine. Something else was wrong. My throat tightened, and the world around me seemed to blur. I knew, in that instant, that Melanie had drugged me—had been trying to get me to drink for a reason.
“Melanie, what have you done to me?” I gasped, trying to steady myself, to move, but my legs felt weak, my mind clouded. I stood up, but the three men quickly closed in on me.
“Chloe, enjoy being pampered for once,” Melanie’s voice echoed. “Don’t waste your time on Matt. He’s not interested in you anymore, so don’t squander your best years. I’m helping you!”
Her tone was casual, almost businesslike, as if she were doing me a favor. The irony of it all made my stomach churn. I struggled against the men closing in, but they were too strong, their hands firm on my arms. Panic rose, but I couldn’t get my body to respond the way I wanted.
Melanie didn’t even look back. She looked at the men and said, “This is my sister-in-law. Please work hard and serve her well. Oh, let me take a photo! Here’s a better angle. Hahaha!”
I wanted to scream. I wanted to fight, to break free from this nightmare. But my body betrayed me. My vision blurred even further as I stumbled. Melanie’s final, contemptuous smile seared into my memory as she stepped out of the room. The door clicked shut behind her, and I was left alone, trapped.
