Chapter_65
The Game Has Officially Begun
My life took a drastic turn the moment I stepped into the Urban Builders office. The surprise Fred had prepared for me left me completely speechless. Not only did he sign an exclusive agency contract with me, but he also registered a construction company worth 150 million dollars in my name. To top it off, he dispatched a professional team to handle the structural design and construction for me.
I struggled to find the right words to express my gratitude, but Fred simply shook my hand and said, “We both stand to benefit from this, so no need for thanks. You’ve saved me from a critical situation once again. It’s an honor to be able to help you.”
After a moment, he added, “Once we’ve both overcome these challenges, come visit me in the city. Stay in touch, and let me know if you need anything.”
He handed me a comprehensive set of documents about steel windows and the related paperwork. I thanked him sincerely, nodding. “Okay. Then there’s nothing else to say. Until we meet again!”
As I left the Urban Builders office, a sense of determination filled me. “Chloe, the game has officially begun,” I whispered to myself. I knew Atlas had played a key role in all of this, though I never asked what exactly had been discussed between them.
On the day of my departure, Atlas accompanied me to the train station for my journey back to my hometown. Watching him stand on the platform as I left, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was growing more attached.
Back home, I worked diligently, preparing the window bidding documents and finalizing the details for my company. I sent everything off to Foswood via express delivery, right into Atlas’s hands. It was far more efficient than carrying everything myself.
Two days later, I flew back to Foswood. To my surprise, not only was Matthew waiting for me at the airport, but so was Melanie. When I saw them together, I couldn’t help but grin slyly.
“Honey,” Matthew greeted, pulling me into a hug. “I missed you so much!”
I bit my tongue, silently cursing. Missed me? He’d only called once during the entire trip. I was sure he had been too busy enjoying himself every night.
I needed to win this game, and I wouldn’t let him get the upper hand. I threw myself into his arms, playing the part with coy affection. “Honey, I missed you too!” I said, immediately feeling a wave of discomfort.
Turning to Melanie, I added, “I didn’t expect you to be here too!”
“Yeah, I’ve been with my brother all this time,” she replied smugly. “He said he’d pick you up, so here I am!”
“Just as I thought, you’ve been together the whole time!” I teased playfully, wearing a sly smile. “You’ve worked hard while I was away!”
Matthew gave my hand a brief squeeze and studied my face. “You’ve lost some weight,” he observed.
“Yeah, I got sick,” I said casually. “But I’m still beautiful, right? I feel reborn! Let’s go home.”
Once we arrived at the house, I noticed it had been deliberately cleaned. The faint scent of air freshener lingered in the air.
“Wow, the house looks spotless,” I commented. “It doesn’t feel like the house of someone who’s been away. It’s surprisingly cozy.”
Matthew, sensing the edge in my tone, quickly explained, “I tidied up specifically to welcome you.”
I walked into the bedroom and opened the window, a cheeky grin spreading across my face. “Let’s air the place out. There’s a certain smell in here.”
Suddenly, Melanie stood up and stormed out of the room. I turned to Matthew, raising an eyebrow. “What’s going on? Is she upset?”
Matthew pulled me close, his lips brushing against my cheek as he kissed me gently. “Don’t mind her.”
I narrowed my eyes, a piercing look in my gaze. “I can’t help but feel like she’s angry at us for being so affectionate.”
