I watched Matthew’s face carefully as I asked my question, and for a moment, he seemed genuinely shocked. I didn’t let it show on my face, but inside, I was quietly plotting my next move.
I spoke innocently, like I was just concerned about our future, “That was our house savings, so we need that money back soon. I want to buy a place once I find a suitable one. We can’t afford to delay our move any longer, especially after Ava’s fall. I need to find her a decent kindergarten, preferably Sunnydale Institute.”
I watched Matthew closely as I spoke, but he remained silent. I pretended to notice nothing, keeping up the act of the unaware wife. “Why are you so quiet? I’ve noticed you’ve been so indifferent lately.”
Matthew let out an awkward chuckle and replied, “How’s that? Honey, I’ve got everything under control. I told you what happened to the money, right? We invested in a project that many people have their eyes on.”
His words were smooth, calculated, but I wasn’t fooled.
“We had to make an executive decision then, so I used our house savings as payment first. Do you think we’ll have trouble finding a good house once the company grows stronger? It’s all part of my plan, so don’t worry.”
He smiled, reaching over to gently pinch my nose. It was meant to be endearing, but I could tell it wasn’t genuine. I knew that smile well enough to recognize the lie hidden behind it.
We continued through lunch in silence, each lost in our thoughts, but my mind was fixated on the money. I needed to trace it, and fast—before Matthew could tell me the project had gone south.
Later, I returned to my office and quickly called Ivanna to update her. I sent her a photo of Johnson, knowing that Matthew wouldn’t be showing his face at the office for the next few days.
The afternoon passed slowly as I went through the “special” materials Matthew had prepared for me. I had to admit, the woman who had taken Matthew from me was impressively meticulous. But it was becoming clear—she wasn’t someone I should underestimate.
Over the next few days, Matthew stuck to his regular routine, while Johnson was frequently absent from the office. With Matthew being so cautious around me, I could only assume the other woman would be just as careful not to expose herself.
On Monday morning, after Matthew and I dropped Ava off, we headed to the company. I had barely made it back to my office when my phone buzzed with a new message.
I absentmindedly slipped off my coat and picked up my phone. The message contained a photo, but when I opened it, my hand trembled as the image loaded.
There were two high-definition photos on the screen. The first was a close-up of Matthew sleeping on a hotel bed. His profile was clearly visible, but what caught my attention was the woman’s midsection nestled against him. It was detailed, too clear to mistake.
The second photo, taken from a different angle, was just as damning. It showed Matthew’s hand resting between the woman’s thighs, the messy sheets a clear indication of what had transpired the night before.
The photos were explicit, intimate, almost too detailed, as if they were taken purposefully to taunt me. They looked like selfies, cropped to focus on the damning actions.
I felt a sharp pain in my chest as the images burned into my mind. The breath left my lungs in a rush, and I sat down heavily in my office chair, clutching my chest. I took deep, shaky breaths, trying to calm the storm inside me.
Even though I had mentally prepared for the possibility of this, the raw reality hit me harder than I’d expected. The images were more than I could bear at once. They were far worse than anything my imagination had conjured up.
Still in shock, I checked the phone number that had sent the photos. I didn’t recognize it, but before I could gather my thoughts, another message came through from the same number.
This message was even more provocative than the last, and I had no idea what I was about to face next.
