The rice cooker was empty. Audrey froze for a moment, eyes wide, the realization hitting her hard. She had completely forgotten about the rice!
“Kathy… there’s no rice!” she said, her voice small, almost embarrassed.
Catherine didn’t even flinch, still carrying the dishes to the table with ease. She turned her head slightly, a cold look in her eyes, as if she’d expected this. “Did you really think you could cook without checking the rice first?” she asked, her tone dry.
Audrey could feel her cheeks flush in embarrassment. She had made so many mistakes already. First the eggs, then the knife incident, and now this. She tried to salvage the situation. “I—I’ll go check if they have any rice nearby.”
But Catherine didn’t let her move. “It’s fine. I’ll go find some.” She placed the dishes down on the table, turning and walking toward the kitchen with that same efficient pace. Audrey stood there, utterly defeated, as she watched her sister take control once again.
As Catherine moved through the house with purpose, Audrey noticed the way the viewers’ comments were flooding the screen.
“Oh my god, Catherine is a queen! Not only does she save her sister’s life, but she also can cook like a pro!”
“I swear, she’s secretly a chef or something! How is she so good at everything?”
“Don’t be too hard on Audrey, guys. She’s trying her best. But wow, Catherine’s like a superwoman.”
The comments were filled with praise for Catherine, and while Audrey didn’t feel jealous, a part of her longed to be able to impress viewers the same way. She knew she had her own charm, but she couldn’t help but compare herself to her sister. Catherine was everything Audrey wanted to be—cool, composed, talented.
When Catherine returned a few minutes later with a small bag of rice, Audrey let out a sigh of relief. “Thanks, Kathy,” she said, her voice grateful, though still tinged with a bit of frustration at her own mistakes.
Catherine didn’t respond as she got the rice cooking. Audrey sat down at the table, trying to avoid making any more mistakes, when suddenly, Catherine spoke again.
“You know,” Catherine said quietly, “you don’t need to try so hard to impress me.”
Audrey blinked, her head snapping up to look at her sister. “What?”
“You’ve been trying to impress me all day,” Catherine continued, her voice softer now, almost as if she was letting her guard down. “But you don’t have to. I’m not some judge.”
Audrey could only stare at her, stunned by the words. Was this the same cold Catherine who usually kept everything to herself? Audrey wasn’t sure how to respond, her heart suddenly swelling with emotions she didn’t quite understand.
“You’re… not mad at me?” Audrey asked hesitantly.
Catherine finally looked at her, her face still impassive but there was something slightly warmer in her eyes. “Why would I be mad? You’re my sister.”
Audrey’s heart skipped a beat. Maybe, just maybe, things were changing between them.
As the two sisters sat down to eat the meal that Catherine had so expertly prepared, Audrey felt a sense of peace settle over her. She wasn’t perfect, and maybe she never would be. But for once, she felt like she wasn’t alone in her journey to figure it all out.
The comment section was still buzzing, but Audrey didn’t care about that for once. She smiled at her sister, a genuine smile that reached her eyes.
“Thanks for everything, Kathy.”
Catherine glanced at her, a rare, almost imperceptible smile playing at the corners of her lips. “Don’t mess up next time,” she teased.
Audrey couldn’t help but laugh. Maybe they would be okay after all.
