Catherine raised an eyebrow, not sure whether to smile or roll her eyes at the dramatic flair in Audrey’s voice. Still, she could see the sincerity in Audrey’s eyes, and she felt a pang of appreciation for her friend’s generosity.
But as Audrey continued her shopping spree, Catherine’s thoughts drifted back to Erik. Her resolve strengthened. The sooner this shopping trip ended, the sooner she could move on to more important matters.
Audrey, on the other hand, was lost in her own world, completely wrapped up in choosing clothes for Catherine. She never seemed to run out of options—each dress, each outfit she picked felt like the perfect choice, though Catherine’s preferences were still unclear to her.
After a while, the sales assistant returned with a new set of luxurious garments, each more exquisite than the last. “These are our top new arrivals, Miss Swann,” she said with a smile, watching Audrey’s face light up. The prices of these pieces were clearly steep, but Audrey was undeterred. She had already decided that today, Catherine would have something special, no matter the cost.
Audrey’s determination only grew stronger as she held up one particularly expensive gown, a rich shade of sapphire blue that seemed to glow under the soft lighting. “This one is the one, Kathy,” Audrey said with confidence. “It’s perfect for you.”
Catherine glanced at the dress, then back at Audrey’s excited face. It wasn’t that she didn’t appreciate the gesture—it was just that the timing felt off. She was too preoccupied with other matters, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that, somehow, shopping for clothes wasn’t the right focus right now.
Still, as Audrey eagerly waited for her opinion, Catherine sighed and gave in. “Alright,” she said, her voice soft. “Let’s try it.”
Audrey’s face lit up with joy, and before Catherine could change her mind, Audrey had already signaled for the assistant to wrap the gown and had started pulling Catherine into the fitting room.
Catherine briefly closed her eyes, trying to push her worries to the back of her mind. For the moment, Audrey was happy, and she would let her have this small victory. But deep down, Catherine knew that the real battle would be with Erik.
