Branden’s smirk deepened as he met her gaze, unfazed by her sharp tone. “I’ve done my research,” he said, his voice smooth and confident, as if it were the most natural thing in the world to know every detail about something that piqued his interest.
Catherine raised an eyebrow, not entirely convinced. “Research, huh?” She leaned back against the seat, still skeptical but intrigued by his persistence. There was something about Branden that made him almost impossible to dismiss entirely, no matter how much she tried.
He didn’t miss the flicker of curiosity in her eyes. “I can tell you’re not easily swayed,” he continued, his voice warm, almost coaxing. “But I can also tell you’re starting to get hungry. It’s a shame to pass by such a good meal, don’t you think?”
Catherine’s stomach gave a small, involuntary growl, which she quickly ignored, pretending it didn’t happen. She folded her arms, her expression still cool, but a hint of amusement played at the corners of her lips. “I’m not that easily swayed.”
Branden chuckled, enjoying the banter. “We’ll see about that.”
He turned to Paxton. “Pull over. Let’s stop for a quick bite.”
Paxton hesitated for a brief moment, surprised at the sudden change of plans, but then obeyed, slowly steering the car to the side of the street where the food trucks were parked.
Catherine watched, still unsure of whether to indulge in Branden’s suggestion. The street was lively, the air thick with the smells of sizzling meat and spices. She could hear the hum of chatter, laughter, and the clatter of utensils as people gathered around the trucks, enjoying their food. It was a stark contrast to the luxurious, secluded world she was often a part of.
Once the car stopped, Branden turned to Catherine with a playful glint in his eyes. “Come on,” he said, leaning slightly toward her. “You might just enjoy it. No harm in trying something new.”
Catherine hesitated, but only for a moment. Despite her resistance, a part of her was curious. She had to admit, the idea of tasting something different from her usual meals was somewhat appealing, especially after the long day she’d had. She was still wary of getting too involved, but for once, she felt like indulging.
“Fine,” she said, opening the car door and stepping out. “But only for a quick bite. I’m not staying long.”
Branden followed her out, his eyes flashing with satisfaction. “Quick bite, sure,” he agreed with a grin.
As they approached one of the trucks, the vendor greeted them warmly, offering a menu of dishes that all looked delicious. The rich aromas in the air made Catherine’s stomach growl again, louder this time. She ignored it, keeping her face stoic.
Branden leaned closer, lowering his voice just for her to hear. “I promise, the best barbecue you’ll ever taste.”
Catherine glanced at him, half amused. “You sure about that?”
“I’m positive,” he replied confidently. “But let’s see if you’re willing to try.”
She smirked, making her choice from the menu. “Let’s see if this lives up to your hype.”
As they ordered, Branden glanced at her with a knowing smile, sensing that Catherine was far more intrigued than she cared to admit. The night was still young, and he knew that with every little moment like this, he was starting to chip away at her walls, even if she refused to admit it.
