The class was in absolute shock as Bryan’s demeanor continued to shift unexpectedly. Just as everyone had anticipated him to lash out at Catherine, he surprised them all by breaking into a faint, almost playful smile. It was an unusual change from his usual stoic and intimidating self, and it left everyone in a state of confusion.
Bryan pulled his chair out and sat down next to Catherine, leaning toward her in a friendly manner. “It’s okay. We are now classmates and deskmates, right? We’ll become friends once we get more familiar with each other, won’t we?” His voice was relaxed, and he spoke with an air of casual confidence.
The students around them were speechless. This was Bryan? The Bryan they had all heard so much about, who was supposed to be cold and unapproachable, was acting like a playful troublemaker—flirting even. It didn’t make sense to them. Was he really trying to be friendly with Catherine?
Catherine, who had been observing Bryan with some curiosity, found herself making a comparison to someone else. She couldn’t help but think that Bryan’s sudden change in behavior reminded her of Ronin—a playful, carefree guy. But there was something missing. Ronin was definitely cuter, and besides, she already had him in her life. No need for someone like Bryan.
If Bryan had known what Catherine was thinking, he would have likely exploded in frustration. He was the boss of Sincere High School—respected by everyone. For Catherine to find him “not cute enough” to even consider as a friend was nothing short of outrageous to him.
Before anyone could fully process the unexpected turn of events, the mathematics teacher burst into the classroom. She was a notorious figure at the academy, known for her strict demeanor and loud voice. The sight of Bryan still surrounded by his friends made her immediately scold the entire group, demanding they return to their seats.
The students scrambled back to their places, all nervous under the teacher’s piercing gaze. Finally, she opened her book, ready to start the lesson, but her attention quickly shifted when she saw Catherine resting her head on the desk, clearly asleep.
Her irritation flared. “Who is that? How dare you sleep in my class? If you don’t want to study, then get out!” she roared, her voice shaking the room. Everyone went silent, watching Catherine for a reaction. But Catherine didn’t budge. She remained completely still, showing no sign of caring about the teacher’s outburst.
The teacher’s anger grew when she realized that Catherine wasn’t even moving. Fuming, she grabbed a book from her desk and hurled it toward Catherine. The class held their breath, bracing for impact.
But Bryan, sitting right next to Catherine, moved quickly. In an instant, he reached out and caught the book mid-air, his grip tight and controlled. The movement was so smooth and fast that the students couldn’t help but admire his skill.
“Oh my god, Bryan is so cool!” a few girls whispered in awe. His display of athleticism was impressive, and it only fueled the growing admiration for him.
The mathematics teacher, however, was livid. She had hoped to intimidate Catherine, but now her anger shifted to Bryan. She turned to him with a sharp glare. “Bryan, what are you doing?” she snapped.
Bryan, still holding the book, didn’t flinch. “Miss, don’t you know you can’t hit a student?” he said, his tone firm.
The teacher seemed taken aback. She had not expected such defiance from Bryan, of all people. After a moment, her face twisted with fury, and she retorted, “It’s my class now. Catherine is sleeping in my class. Is that right?”
Bryan’s irritation only deepened. He wasn’t sure what made him so defensive over Catherine, but he couldn’t stand seeing the teacher treat her so unfairly. “She probably doesn’t know the rules yet, being new and all. Shouldn’t you at least talk to her first, instead of throwing a book at her?” he replied, his voice rising with frustration.
The mathematics teacher’s temper flared even more. She sneered at Catherine, looking her up and down with disdain. “So, she’s the new girl everyone’s been talking about. The one who never went to school. No wonder she sleeps in class.”
The class gasped in shock. The rumors about Catherine’s past had only been whispered among the students, but the teacher’s words seemed to confirm them. The suggestion that Catherine had never been educated hit hard, and a few students exchanged uncertain glances.
But the teacher wasn’t done yet. “Let me tell you something,” she continued with venom in her voice. “By allowing someone like her into our class, the school is sending a message. This is what happens when you don’t study—when you don’t work hard. She’s nothing but a lazy pig waiting to be slaughtered, doing nothing but sleeping and eating all day.”
Her words were cruel and meant to humiliate Catherine. But Catherine remained still, unfazed, unaware of the harshness that the teacher was unloading onto her.
Bryan, however, was having none of it. His anger reached its boiling point, and with a forceful bang, he slammed his hand onto the table. “Is this what a teacher should be like?” he demanded, standing up, his eyes locked on the teacher.
The mathematics teacher’s face twisted with fury. “Bryan, don’t think that just because you have good grades and come from a powerful family, you can disrespect me!” she snapped, her voice trembling with rage.
Bryan, his lips curling into a mocking smile, leaned in closer. “Disrespect you? How dare you call yourself a teacher? You attacked a student, and you called her a pig. You’ve been getting away with this because you’re on good terms with the school board, but that’s not why Class 8 has good grades. It’s not because of you!” he shot back, his words sharp and unforgiving.
The teacher’s face turned beet red with humiliation, and she pointed an accusing finger at Bryan. “Get out of my class now! I won’t tolerate scum like you here!” she ordered, her voice rising.
But Bryan didn’t budge. He stayed rooted to his spot, staring defiantly at the teacher. It was clear he wasn’t going anywhere, and it was obvious to everyone that he wasn’t intimidated by her.
As the tension reached its peak, something strange caught Bryan’s attention. He turned to look at Catherine, only to find her slowly waking up. She sat up, looking relaxed as she lazily leaned back against her chair, her eyes focused on him.
The shift in her demeanor caught Bryan off guard. Her gaze was calm, but there was something almost knowing about it—a look that seemed to pierce right through him. His breath caught in his throat, and for a moment, he was completely dazed.
The whole class watched in silence, waiting for the next move. Bryan, momentarily lost in Catherine’s eyes, stood frozen, unsure of what to do next. What was it about her that made everything else feel insignificant in that moment?
