Catherine’s curiosity was piqued by the sudden commotion. The buzz of excitement rippled through the crowd, as heads turned toward a group of people gathering near the entrance. The atmosphere seemed to shift, and the usual idle chatter grew louder, tinged with whispers of anticipation.
Catherine, still standing slightly apart from the others, observed the scene with her usual detached air. Her expression remained unreadable, but her sharp eyes flicked between the source of the noise and the people surrounding her.
The group near the entrance parted slightly, revealing a tall figure stepping forward—none other than Mr. David himself.
He was a man of distinction, tall and lean, with a composed and almost regal air about him. His silver hair glinted under the chandelier lights, and his sharp gaze swept across the room. As soon as he stepped in, all attention was drawn to him.
He moved toward the center of the room, greeting guests with a warm smile, though his eyes lingered for a moment longer on the Swann family. The murmurs of the women at the side grew even more pronounced.
“Mr. David must have noticed the Swanns’ arrival,” one woman whispered, her voice heavy with intrigue. “Did you see the way he looked at that girl? The one in the shabby clothes?”
“I heard,” another replied in a hushed tone, “Mr. David values family unity. But there’s something off about the Swanns, isn’t there? They can’t even manage their own daughter.”
Their conversation was cut short when Mr. David approached Korbin, offering a handshake. The two exchanged pleasantries, but Catherine’s eyes were drawn to something else.
She noticed a young man standing at Mr. David’s side. His presence exuded power and confidence, and his sharp, calculating eyes swept across the room with an intensity that caught her attention.
He wasn’t like the other socialites milling about; there was something different about him. He stood with the air of someone who didn’t need to make an effort to be noticed—yet everyone seemed to notice him anyway.
Catherine’s gaze lingered on him for a moment longer than she intended, before she quickly turned her attention away, forcing herself to focus on the swirling conversation around her. Still, something about him intrigued her. His demeanor… it seemed familiar in a way she couldn’t quite place.
The night continued, but the flicker of curiosity in Catherine’s mind didn’t die down. As she watched the wealthy families interact, the laughter, the casual remarks, and the subtle jabs at her appearance, she couldn’t help but wonder if this event would bring more than just gossip—it might reveal more than she was ready for.
